{"id":196143,"date":"2026-03-18T10:13:17","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T10:13:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/196143\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T10:13:17","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T10:13:17","slug":"trump-administration-florida-a-hotspot-for-medicaid-fraud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/196143\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump administration: Florida a &#8216;hotspot&#8217; for Medicaid fraud"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Trump administration on Tuesday widened its <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oz-medicaid-new-york-fraud-investigation-a00bd997ee5b8d839254144377c3b167\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">efforts to stamp out Medicaid fraud<\/a>, at least in its fifth state this year, calling on Florida officials to share information on how they identify, prevent, and address bad actors in their state program.<\/p>\n<p>Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/dr-oz-mehmet-things-to-know-trump-be62594d66e07b9544e48ddf9febf7bf\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Dr. Mehmet Oz<\/a> had <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oz-medicaid-new-york-fraud-investigation-a00bd997ee5b8d839254144377c3b167\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">previously sent similar requests<\/a> to New York, Minnesota, Maine and California in what has been a growing, Trump administration-wide initiative to crack down on fraud, waste and abuse.<\/p>\n<p>The letter to Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and other state leaders is the first such request that Oz has announced to a Republican-led state as the administration seeks to convey that fraud won\u2019t be accepted regardless of political leadership.<\/p>\n<p>It comes a day after President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create an anti-fraud task force across federal benefit programs led by Vice President JD Vance. The president has ramped up such efforts as many American voters say they&#8217;re concerned about affordability ahead of November\u2019s elections.<\/p>\n<p>Announcing the new probe on social media, Oz <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrOzCMS\/status\/2033955189141737593?s=20\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">wrote<\/a> that Florida \u201chas been a hotspot for health care fraud for years\u201d and called on state leaders to \u201cstep up and work with us to stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He referenced past examples of high-dollar fraud schemes in Florida\u2019s Medicare and Medicaid programs that resulted in criminal charges and said that \u201cgiven the widespread scale and nature of these schemes,\u201d CMS needed more details about the state\u2019s program oversight.<\/p>\n<p>Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier responded to Oz&#8217;s post on X and shared an example of a recent Medicaid fraud arrest in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Medicaid system is overwhelmed with fraud and abuse, and we look forward to working with Dr. Oz on these issues,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Spokespeople for the other letter recipients, including DeSantis and Florida Agency for Health Care Administration officials, didn&#8217;t immediately respond to emailed inquiries. Oz gave the officials 30 days to respond to a list of detailed questions.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, CMS <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/minnesota-medicaid-funding-fraud-trump-47b160fd664cdfeef355ae00ca5fecc0\" class=\"Link\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">halted Medicaid payments to Minnesota<\/a> over fraud concerns, a move the state\u2019s Democratic Gov. Tim Walz denounced as a political attack.
