ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 The city of Orlando is continuing its investment in local communities, renovating neighborhood parks to better serve families and reflect the needs of a growing population.<\/p>\n
What may look like just a place for children to play holds a deeper meaning for those who live nearby.<\/p>\n
With a celebration marking the reopening of Poppy Park playground with a ribbon cutting, city leaders say the space is part of a broader plan to improve 11 parks and playgrounds over the next two years.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe see investments in parks as an investment in you and them,\u201d said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.<\/p>\n
The upgrades at Poppy Park include a larger play structure, climbing areas, multiple slides, and an ADA-accessible swing\u2014features designed to make the park more inclusive and engaging for all children.<\/p>\n
But for many in the community, the park represents more than just recreation.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is truly an essential place for the community. Every other month, we have prayer in the park where neighbors come together. We exchange prayers, pray for each other, pray for our youth,\u201d said Commissioner Bakari Burns.<\/p>\n
Community leaders say spaces like this are critical in providing a safe environment for children.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are a lot of things that are happening, and these are the type of places that we need to keep safe for our kids so they can continue to grow,\u201d Burns said.<\/p>\n
For families, the park also offers something increasingly valuable\u2014free access to outdoor space during a time of rising costs.<\/p>\n
\u201cGas prices are going up, food is going up, but the cost to come to this park is free,\u201d Burns added.<\/p>\n
City officials say Poppy Park is the second of 11 planned park improvements, with more upgrades expected to roll out across Orlando over the next two years. <\/p>\n
