Suspending Florida\u2019s gas tax<\/a> is a no-go, according to Gov. Ron DeSantis. Easing prices<\/a> is just, like, not something for the state to get involved in at this time, OK?<\/p>\n

When Democratic lawmakers asked<\/a> if DeSantis would consider suspending the state\u2019s tax on gas as the United States and Israel continue a wildly unpopular<\/a> war with Iran, DeSantis said<\/a>, \u201cMy answer is just get the cost down internationally, and that means having stable energy markets, making sure we\u2019re doing everything to get our stuff to market. But I don\u2019t know that there\u2019s going to be any simple fix.\u201d<\/p>\n

Totally. It\u2019s not Florida\u2019s place to relieve costs for people who live here. Even with gas exceeding $4 a gallon in some parts of the state, you must take into consideration how silly suspending the excise tax on gas would be. The state has only adjusted taxes on a scant handful of things in history:<\/p>\n

Gun safes<\/p>\n

Crossbows<\/p>\n

Fishing rods<\/p>\n

Lanterns<\/p>\n

Flashlights<\/p>\n

Hiking boots<\/p>\n

Sunscreen<\/p>\n

Batteries<\/p>\n

Life jackets<\/p>\n

Generators<\/p>\n

Camping stoves<\/p>\n

Batteries<\/p>\n

Smoke detectors<\/p>\n

Diapers<\/p>\n

Jigsaw puzzles<\/p>\n

Jeans<\/p>\n

Hoodies<\/p>\n

Purses<\/p>\n

Shoes<\/p>\n

Fanny packs<\/p>\n

Matching and memory games<\/p>\n

Blocks<\/p>\n

Construction paper<\/p>\n

Lunch boxes<\/p>\n

Three-ring binders<\/p>\n

And gas. Yes. The Florida Motor Fuel Tax Relief Act of 2022, passed by the Florida Legislature and signed into law by DeSantis, eased gas prices for Floridians for a month. DeSantis\u2019s team curiously timed the tax break to kick off with voting<\/a> amid the governor\u2019s bid for reelection. Furthermore, President Joe Biden was in office back then. The situation could not be more different. Please, be reasonable. This is a federal and international issue, and there\u2019s simply nothing the state can do.<\/p>\n
