TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Has this happened to you? Your GPS tells you to turn onto one street, but the street sign says something different.

That could be caused by street renaming procedures, which might soon get unified at the ballot box.

Tallahassee leaders often rename streets for former political figures, public servants and famous artists, but the Leon County Commission is advancing a proposed charter amendment to change the county constitution to allow them, not the City of Tallahassee, to set street renaming rules.

“Would you entrust Leon County’s government to be fair, to be balanced, and to lift up and to weigh out all of the options,” said Leon County Commissioner Bill Proctor.

Tallahassee residents have seen the impacts of street renaming before. UPS and FedEx drivers weren’t leaving some packages because the street sign and the GPD didn’t match.

The city and county worked under the same system until 2024, when the city adopted a separate ordinance.

“So we’re not lifting this up to ram rod street names on people, and particularly when the people in the name are not symmetrically politically aligned,” Proctor said.

The county commission still needs to hold one more vote to officially put the measure on the ballot in November.

To keep up with the latest news as it develops, follow WCTV on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Nextdoor and X (Twitter).

Have a news tip or see an error?
