The effort is part of the organization’s Food for Families program, which will deliver groceries directly to 1,000 households on April 4.

This year’s distribution will include more than 60,000 pounds of food, reaching families across Ocoee, Winter Garden, West Orlando, Apopka and parts of East Lake County.

For many volunteers, the work is personal.

“It makes you realize how fortunate you are and all the things that you’ve been blessed with that honors,” said volunteer Shelly Mhadeo.

Others say they’ve seen the impact of food insecurity firsthand.

“Honestly, it’s really sad.
