PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 The Port St Lucie Police Department has released a chilling 911 call made just moments after an 11-year-old girl was hit by a car while running to her bus stop Friday morning. <\/p>\n
The crash happened around 8:50 a.m. at the intersection of SW Gemini Lane and SW Thornhill Drive. According to the Port St. Lucie Police Department (PSLPD), the child was unaccompanied and had been waiting near the northwest corner of the intersection. After one vehicle passed, she darted into the roadway and was hit by an eastbound white Honda Civic she didn\u2019t see coming.<\/p>\n

Hard to watch surveillance video shows the child running across the street, then she\u2019s suddenly struck by a white Honda Civic. Her backpack flies into the air and her small body falls to the ground and doesn\u2019t move. The female driver of the Honda Civic immediately called 911 and hopped out to help.<\/p>\n
The woman can be heard telling dispatchers she struck a young girl and asking for an ambulance to arrive.<\/p>\n

She was airlifted to St. Mary\u2019s Medical Center in West Palm Beach with serious injuries. Police received an update from medical staff stating the girl is intubated, but has non-life-threatening injuries.<\/p>\n Neighbors said more needs to be done to protect children going to school including possibly more patrol to better signage.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a very busy intersection. A lot of people cut through here to avoid those two roads PSL Blvd. and crosstown so it is a very busy intersection especially in the mornings,” said Hamid Mustafa, resident.<\/p>\n Carolyn Cosme has lived in the neighborhood for about 9 years and said she feels more stop signs could make a difference. <\/p>\n \u201cI think a 4 way stop sign is a good idea,” Cosme said. “Not a lot of parents have the luxury of being able to take their kids to the bus stop and for their safety they shouldn\u2019t have to be crossing a busy intersection.\u201d<\/p>\n There is no crossing guard assigned to that intersection, and the child\u2019s bus stop was located in the southwest corner.
