Appearing on \u201cThe View\u201d Friday to promote his latest movie, \u201cProject Hail Mary,\u201d the actor got grilled by one of the hosts about his \u201cgorgeous wife\u201d Eva Mendes. Well, not about the Miami-born actress, exactly, but how much of her Cuban culture rubbed off on him.<\/p>\n
The notoriously private couple have been together since meeting on the set of 2012\u2019s \u201cThe Place Beyond the Pines.\u201d Gosling and Mendes, who have never publicly acknowledged if they are married or not, have two daughters together.<\/p>\n
Back to \u201cThe View.\u201d When Ana Navarro had her turn to speak to Gosling, she put him on the spot, telling them they had \u201csomething in common.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019re both married to crazy Cubans,\u201d joked Navarro, whose husband is former Florida GOP head Al Cardenas<\/a>. \u201cAnd the entire family. Because when you\u2019re married to a Cuban, you\u2019re married to the family.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cYou said you felt there should be a support group?\u201d Gosling said to laughs.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to see what you picked up in all these years. So I want to give you a Cuban test,\u201d said Navarro, who asked his director seated next to him, Phil Lord \u2014 who is also from Miami with a Cuban background \u2014 not to help (he did).<\/p>\n Navarro\u2019s first question: \u201cWhat is a croqueta?\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cOh, it\u2019s a little … heaven on a plate,\u201d answered Gosling, who is from Canada. \u201cIt\u2019s hand-held, deep-fried….\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cA ham torpedo,\u201d Lord piped in.<\/p>\n The next question, about picadillo, stumped the Oscar nominee.<\/p>\n \u201cOh my…I\u2019m freezing,\u201d he stammered. \u201cI know it!\u201d<\/p>\n Lord chimed in again with an assist, explaining the dish consisted of \u201cchopped up ground beef\u201d and other ingredients.<\/p>\n Third question: What is your favorite flavor of pastelito?<\/p>\n \u201cThere\u2019s no wrong answer to this,\u201d offered Lord, who graduated from Ransom Everglades.<\/p>\n \u201cGuava! Guava!\u201d Gosling finally responded. Ding, ding.<\/p>\n \u201cYes! I like queso,\u201d said Navarro, whose last question regarded the meaning of \u201cpapi rico\u201d (a hot guy).<\/p>\n Gosling had no idea, nor did Lord.<\/p>\n \u201cEva Mendes needs to give me back her Cuban card,\u201d the Nicaragua native told her famous guest. \u201cShe hasn\u2019t taught her husband anything!\u201d<\/p>\n But Gosling wasn\u2019t taking the L that easily.<\/p>\n \u201cIn my defense … we haven\u2019t talked about mojo, we haven\u2019t talked about yuca,\u201d the heartthrob said in a nearly perfect Spanish accent. \u201cWe haven\u2019t talked about Ironbeer vs. Materva,\u201d referencing the two popular soft drinks.<\/p>\n Impressed, Navarro then gave him a high-five.<\/p>\n \u201cPlus, Eva\u2019s mom makes the most amazing arroz con leche,\u201d added Gosling, effectively shutting down the inquisition.<\/p>\n \u201cOK, you redeemed yourself,\u201d the Coral Gables resident admitted to applause. \u201cEva gets her Cuban card back.\u201d<\/p>\n
