On Feb. 25, the University of South Florida St. Petersburg\u00a0College Democrats\u00a0hosted their first general body meeting (GBM) of the semester breaking down the infamous Epstein files.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

President Izabella Annunziata and\u00a0vice\u00a0president\u00a0Morgan\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0of the College Democrats spent three weeks compiling a slideshow that presented what is currently known about the case involving financier and convicted child sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein and his associate, Ghislaine Maxwell.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it was the best way to start our semester, by being able to provide a lot of information to our students about something so heavy going on in the world,\u201d Annunziata told\u00a0The Crow\u2019s Nest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI mentioned it at the E-Board meeting that I really wanted to do this,\u201d\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0said.\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0have been following this entire case since, I want to say, September [or] October \u2013 once the birthday book got released.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The Epstein files are a collection of over six million documents, images, videos,\u00a0logs\u00a0and emails that were released by the\u00a0U.S. Department of Justice<\/a>\u00a0on Jan. 30, 2026,\u00a0in response to the Epstein Files Transparency Act.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Combing through the files has proven to be polarizing for college students. Misinformation has clouded the topic and made the\u00a0difficult task\u00a0of understanding the files\u00a0nearly impossible, the College Democrats\u00a0said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Heimkreiter\u00a0saw the opportunity to aid students in familiarizing themselves with the actual contents of the files.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI almost feel like as\u00a0College Democrats, we have a responsibility to help inform people about the issues going on in the world,\u201d\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The GBM provided students with a deeper understanding of how to read the 12 data sets that make up the Epstein files. The presentation was organized into timelines, victim testimonies and\u00a0definitions of suspected codes which were used as shorthand between traffickers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c[The GBM] was mostly very respectful and informational, and it did highlight victim stories, which I appreciate, and it focused on just facts and information and tried to steer away from conspiracy theories,\u201d said Junior environmental science and policy major Norah McElroy, an attendee of the GBM.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

While reflecting on the process of organizing the presentation,\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0said, \u201cI just get so angry when researching. It really hurt. But I knew it was going to be worth it to help educate people.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201c\u2018I\u2019m\u00a0like, \u2018If I can\u2019t do it, then who will?\u2019\u201d\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0added.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Heimkreiter\u00a0also stressed the importance of relying on credible sources when researching. Non-governmental sites can easily become convoluted and spread misinformation.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

One source the College Democrats suggested was\u00a0Jmail.world<\/a>, a site that replicates Jeffrey Epstein\u2019s personal email account and is consistently updated with newly released information.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think\u00a0Jmail\u00a0is an incredible resource. Especially because\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0made by college students, so people our age, I think\u00a0that\u2019s\u00a0very important. Knowing that\u00a0they\u2019re\u00a0just as curious as us and\u00a0they\u00a0wanna\u00a0help keep the public informed,\u201d\u00a0Heimkreiter\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

McElroy\u00a0cautioned against students diving headfirst into the material without the proper mental health resources, due to the sensitive nature of the Epstein files.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThe best thing you can do is look for unbiased sources, look for protected information. I\u00a0don\u2019t\u00a0think\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0a good idea\u00a0to go online and go down a rabbit hole with this information,\u201d they said.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The College Democrats dedicated both the\u00a0initial\u00a0and final slides of the presentation to mental health resources.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
