(CBS12)  \u2014 A woman who was riding as a passenger in a car that was fleeing from South Florida law enforcement was killed after the vehicle crashed into a canal on Sunday night, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. <\/p>\n<p>The man behind the wheel, identified as Michael Malik Harvey, survived the crash and is facing charges of felony murder, aggravated fleeing and eluding causing death, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer, grand theft of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of a crash involving an occupied vehicle. <\/p>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/2026\/03\/23\/woman-dies-after-fleeing-driver-crashes-into-canal-during-police-pursuit-bso-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> South Florida Sun Sentinel<\/a> says the events leading up to the crash occurred shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Sunday, when a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sheriff.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Broward Sheriff&#8217;s Office deput<\/a>y saw a white GMC van driving recklessly on 33rd Avenue in West Park. The van was allegedly stolen from Miami-Dade County. <\/p>\n<p>The Sentiel reports the BSO deputy turned on his lights to pull over Harvey, who was behind the wheel, but he did not stop. The sentinel reports that he allegedly hit the deputy&#8217;s marked patrol car as he fled the area. <\/p>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-true-crime-cold-case-palm-beach-county-sheriffs-office-pbso-eyewitness-who-saw-woman-pushed-from-suv-remains-key-to-solving-2007-murder-black-2007-mercedes-benz-gl450-delray-beach\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Eyewitness who saw woman pushed from SUV remains key to solving 2007 murder<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The deputy did not pursue Harvey in a chase, but instead remained at the scene of the crash, the South Florida Sun Sentinel states. <\/p>\n<p>It wasn&#8217;t until later that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppines.com\/Directory.aspx?DID=5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Pembroke Pines Police Officer<\/a> saw the van driving east on West Hallandale Beach Boulevard, west of I-95. Harvey later drove into the Oakwood Plaza area near Dania Pointe, where he \u201cdeliberately aimed the stolen vehicle at a marked police car, forcing the officer to take evasive action to avoid a collision,\u201d the Sun Sentinel reports. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cA multi-agency pursuit\u201d began for a charge of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. <\/p>\n<p>When Harvey reached State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale, he crashed through a closed metal gate while driving in the wrong direction and drove into a canal. BSO deputies, fire rescue crews and divers responded to the crash, rescuing Harvey and the woman passenger he was with. <\/p>\n<p>Harvey and the woman were both taken to the hospital, the South Florida Sun Sentinel reports. Harvey is expected to make a full recovery, while the woman was later pronounced dead. The woman has not been identified as of Monday afternoon. <\/p>\n<p>The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating the \u201cin-custody death,\u201d while BSO detectives probe both the original West Park incident and the woman\u2019s death.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"BROWARD COUNTY, Fla.
