Miriam Campos wore her \u201cMake Cuba Great Again\u201d baseball cap and her shimmery \u201cTrump\u201d pin to the \u201cFree Cuba\u201d rally on Tuesday in Hialeah. <\/p>\n
Another woman wore a traditional Cuban rumba dress and held up an \u201cIntervene Now. No Dialog\u201d sign. Other demonstrators wore their \u201cPatria Y Vida\u201d T-shirts and their \u201cCuba Libre\u201d hats, scarves, and temporary tattoos. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are hoping that President Trump takes care of us and decides to help us out,\u201d Campos said. <\/p>\n
Rose Rodriguez, a Cuban American, was among the demonstrators who said they want Cubans on the island to be free to protest peacefully against the government without facing arrest or prison time. <\/p>\n
\u201cWe are raising their voices here, where over there they can\u2019t be heard,\u201d Rodriguez said. <\/p>\n
U.S. President Donald Trump and Cuban President Miguel D\u00edaz-Canel have both acknowledged there were U.S.-Cuba talks after Trump cut off Venezuelan and Mexican oil to the communist island. <\/p>\n
Trump tasked U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the son of Cuban migrants, with the talks, and he recently said Cubans aren\u2019t doing enough. <\/p>\n
Without a deal, fuel shortages have prompted transportation problems, power outages, water service disruptions, delays at hospitals, unemployment, and limited access to food and other basics. <\/p>\n
There has been speculation about 94-year-old Ra\u00fal Castro considering replacing D\u00edaz-Canel with his great-nephew Oscar P\u00e9rez-Oliva and promoting his grandson Ra\u00fal \u201cRaulito\u201d Rodr\u00edguez. D\u00edaz-Canel has continued to blame the \u201cU.S. blockade\u201d for the island\u2019s troubles. <\/p>\n
In Hialeah, Cuban American and Cuban demonstrators said they are hoping for political change first, so there can be long-lasting economic reform. That means a Castro is out of the question. <\/p>\n
\u201cCuba is only 90 miles away from the United States, and we want to be friends,\u201d said Campos, who wants Cubans on the island to have the same freedoms and opportunities that she enjoys in South Florida. <\/p>\n
