{"id":20464,"date":"2025-10-25T19:32:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T19:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/20464\/"},"modified":"2025-10-25T19:32:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-25T19:32:12","slug":"early-voting-underway-as-miami-beach-faces-pivotal-nov-4-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/20464\/","title":{"rendered":"Early voting underway as Miami Beach faces pivotal Nov. 4 election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamidade.gov\/elections\/library\/2025-11-04-miami-beach-general-early-voting-schedule.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Early voting is underway<\/a> in Miami Beach, where voters are choosing a Mayor and three city Commissioners in an election that could reshape the city\u2019s governance and relationship with Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At stake on Nov. 4 are four of the seven seats on the dais \u2014 a potential governing majority \u2014 in a city confronting turbulence on multiple fronts: state scrutiny over finances, charges that a local ordinance conflicts with Florida\u2019s homelessness law, the removal of cultural landmarks due to their so-called \u201cwoke\u201d significance and accusations of pay-for-play policymaking that benefits developers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Amid the tension, residents are weighing how the city should balance order, affordability and its international image.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">All commission seats are elected at-large, meaning every voter can weigh in on each race. If no candidate in a commission race wins a majority, the top two advance to a Dec. 9 runoff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Early voting runs through Nov. 2.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mayor: law and order vs. rebuilding tourism<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two familiar figures are facing off for Mayor: incumbent Steven Meiner, a former federal government lawyer and ex-Commissioner, and Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, a sitting Commissioner, Miami Dade College professor and longtime preservation advocate.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meiner is running on a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DPFCZtiiTIy\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">law and order<\/a>\u201d platform highlighting his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/miami\/2025\/03\/27\/spring-break-crowds-south-beach\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">crackdown on Spring Break mayhem<\/a>, work to reduce recidivism by successfully prosecuting criminals and efforts to keep flood control projects on track.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He\u2019s also touted a recent property tax rollback that he calls proof of fiscal discipline.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cMy commitment remains to make Miami Beach the best and safest city in America,\u201d he said in an Oct. 10 campaign video. \u201cMajor crimes are down 15.5% across Miami Beach. This represents real improvement for your daily safety and peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rosen Gonzalez agrees the city regained control but says Meiner\u2019s clampdowns have driven away tourists and small businesses. She told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.local10.com\/news\/local\/2025\/10\/20\/miami-beach-mayoral-race-heats-up-as-meiner-rosen-gonzalez-tout-records-and-visions-for-city\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Local 10<\/a> this month that year over year, Miami Beach is down $4 million in tourism tax revenue, which represents $100 million in economic activity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cWe told the entire world not to come to Miami Beach,\u201d she told <a href=\"https:\/\/wsvn.com\/news\/local\/miami-dade\/miami-beach-mayoral-candidates-meiner-and-rosen-gonzalez-share-visions-for-city-ahead-of-early-voting\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">WSVN<\/a>. \u201cBut we\u2019ve never really told them to come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Accordingly, Rosen Gonzalez\u2019s platform centers on reviving tourism. She also wants to cut red tape for local businesses, foster more affordable housing and improve the city\u2019s transit provisions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Both supported the city\u2019s 2023 <a href=\"https:\/\/library.municode.com\/fl\/miami_beach\/codes\/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=SPAGEOR_CH70MIOF_ARTIIPUPL_DIV2BISKROSKNESKMOMETRELBIMOMOMOBIMOSC_S70-66DE\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">homelessness ordinance<\/a> that allows police to arrest people sleeping in public after shelter offers are refused. Both want a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamitodaynews.com\/2019\/10\/22\/miami-dade-cities-target-docks-for-waterborne-transit\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">long-floated<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamitodaynews.com\/2025\/07\/09\/beach-floats-plan-for-ferry-service-crossing-biscayne\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">water taxi link<\/a> between Miami and Miami Beach,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two have also sparred over crime statistics. Meiner cites mid-year police data showing overall crime down and a successfully prosecution rate of 92% since 2022. Rosen Gonzalez insists aggravated <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/750114-miami-beach-mayoral-candidate-kristen-rosen-gonzalez-posts-then-deletes-inaccurate-crime-data\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">assaults are up<\/a>. In early August, she <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/750114-miami-beach-mayoral-candidate-kristen-rosen-gonzalez-posts-then-deletes-inaccurate-crime-data\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">posted and then quickly deleted<\/a> inaccurate crime data.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Steven-Meiner-Kristen-Rosen-Gonzalez.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-762268 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Steven-Meiner-Kristen-Rosen-Gonzalez-640x360.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>(L-R) Mayor Steven Meiner and Commissioner Kristen Rosen Gonzalez, who is running to unseat him. Meiner <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/726375-miami-beach-mayor-wants-to-end-lease-of-theater-that-screened-israeli-palestinian-documentary\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">drew national criticism<\/a> for trying to evict a nonprofit theater in the city after it screened the Oscar-winning documentary about the Israel-Palestine conflict, \u201cNo Other Land,\u201d which he called antisemitic and a public safety issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He ultimately withdrew the measure.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meiner is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article312049158.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">battling a lawsuit<\/a> an anti-Israel Jewish activist group filed against Miami Beach and its officials alleging he stifled pro-Palestinian protests. Last year, he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article290571899.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">resigned<\/a> from his job as a lawyer for the US. Securities and Exchange Commission amid an internal investigation into allegations of sexual harassment against him.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rosen Gonzalez, meanwhile, has been the subject of five ethics complaints \u2014 \u00a0that led to no findings against her, faced a sexually charged defamation lawsuit that her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article254805352.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">insurer since settled<\/a> and has a history of headline-grabbing moments, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/local\/miami\/2022\/10\/04\/miami-beach-commissioner-mayor-putin\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">comparing<\/a> former Mayor Dan Gelber to Vladimir Putin and falsely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/miami-beach-commission-candidate-kristen-rosen-gonzalez-plays-hispanic-card-only-shes-not\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">calling herself Hispanic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Notably, those issues happened years ago. Rosen Gonzalez told the Miami Herald that she is \u201cwiser\u201d and more collaborative now.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A poll Plantation-based <a href=\"https:\/\/mdwcommunications.com\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">MDW Communications<\/a> conducted in May, before Meiner formally entered the race, showed Rosen Gonzalez leading the incumbent by 6 percentage points, though more than a third of respondents reported being undecided in the contest.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Meiner, a 54-year-old with no party affiliation, carries endorsements from Miami Mayor Francis Suarez, Suny Isles Mayor Laura Svechin, Miami Commissioners Joe Magazine and David Suarez, and former Miami Beach Mayors Dan Gelber and Philip Levine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also has support from the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police and Miami Beach firefighters union IAFF Local 1510.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rosen Gonzalez, a 52-year-old Democrat and Miami Dade College professor, has endorsements from former Mayor Matti Bower, LGBTQ advocacy group SAVE Action PAC and several union groups, including AFSCME Florida, GSAF Local 100 and UNITE HERE Local 355.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In terms of fundraising, Rosen Gonzalez is the clear front-runner. Her campaign account reported raising $136,000 and $6,500 worth of in-kind contributions. The nearly $75,000 she spent through Oct. 3 was about $1,000 more than Meiner reported raising altogether.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami Beach\u2019s elections are nonpartisan, but party politics frequently factor into races.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City Commission, Group 1<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The contest for the open Group 1 seat \u2014 vacated by Rosen Gonzalez \u2014 is the city\u2019s most crowded this year. It features six active candidates. A seventh, Matthew Gultanoff, suspended his campaign last week.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If no one wins more than 50% of the vote, the top two vote-getters will head to a Dec. 9 runoff.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Daniel Ciraldo, a former Executive Director of the Miami Design Preservation League and one of the most articulate opponents of a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/663801-legislature-passes-bill-easing-demolition-replacement-of-old-buildings-with-bigger-structures\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">since-passed Florida law<\/a> easing the demolition and replacement of older, sometimes historic structures, hopes to take his preservationist bona fides to City Hall.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He called over-development \u201cthe most pressing issue, threatening our quality of life, traffic and environment\u201d in answers to a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/663801-legislature-passes-bill-easing-demolition-replacement-of-old-buildings-with-bigger-structures\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">questionnaire<\/a> the Herald sent candidates. If elected, he promised to defend historic districts, curb traffic-intensive projects, ensure transparency in zoning and \u201cput residents \u2014 not special interests \u2014 at the center of city decisions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ciraldo, a 42-year-old Democrat, raised about $107,000 between his campaign account and political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89218\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Our Beach Our Future<\/a>. He\u2019s also notched several <a href=\"https:\/\/danielformiamibeach.org\/endorse\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">community endorsements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Real estate investor Brian Ehrlich, a former member of the city\u2019s Historic Preservation Board and a Bass Museum trustee, pitched himself as a pragmatic modernizer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI see Washington Ave., Lincoln Road, 41st Street and Ocean Drive revitalized with energy and innovation,\u201d he told the Herald.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">But he\u2019s also <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/753091-developer-brian-ehrlich-wants-your-vote-and-your-zoning-laws\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">drawn scrutiny<\/a> for developer-linked donations to his political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voterfocus.com\/CampaignFinance\/candidate_pr.php?op=cv&amp;e=6&amp;c=munmiamibeach&amp;ca=125&amp;rellevel=4&amp;committee=Y\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Miami Beach in Focus<\/a>, which, together with his campaign account, raised $165,000 through the beginning of this month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ehrlich, 44, is a Democrat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Realtor Ava Frankel, who switched from Republican to no party affiliation in 2022, is campaigning on a promise to bring new perspective to the dais and modernize the city\u2019s infrastructure, particularly its flood-mitigation systems.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At 28, she\u2019s the youngest person running for a Miami Beach elected post this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She reported raising about $10,000 through Oct. 3, nearly half of which came through self-loans and donors with \u201cFrankel\u201d in their names.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Daniel-Ciraldo-Brian-Ehrlich-Ava-Frankel-Omar-Jimenez-Monica-Matteo-Salinas-Monique-Pardo-Pope.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-762269 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Daniel-Ciraldo-Brian-Ehrlich-Ava-Frankel-Omar-Jimenez-Monica-Matteo-Salinas-Monique-Pardo-Pope-640x3.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>(Clockwise from top left) Daniel Ciraldo, Brian Ehrlich, Ava Frankel, Omar Jimenez, Monica Matteo-Salinas and Monique Pardo Pope are running to replace Kristen Rosen Gonzalez on the City Commission. Images via the candidates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Restaurateur Omar Jimenez, the founder of the Park View Island Sustainable Association and owner of Bella Cuba restaurant, cites firsthand success in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/608991600095132\/posts\/1512956756365274\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">securing $10 million<\/a> for infrastructure upgrades to North Beach for sewer and stormwater systems, waterways and parks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Cleaning up Miami Beach, specifically its waters, has been a focus of the 39-year-old independent\u2019s for the better part of a decade, since a major sewer main break spilled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biscaynetimes.com\/news\/miami-beach%E2%80%99s-dirty-little-secret\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">1.6 million gallons<\/a> of raw sewage into public waters. He\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/16Qk5Es6dC\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">led beach cleanups<\/a>\u00a0for years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI work for the people, not lobby groups, special interests or developers,\u201d he told the Herald.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He raised $25,000. Of that, $20,000 came from his bank account.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City employee Monica Matteo-Salinas, 46, earned the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/opinion\/election-recommendations\/article312357096.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Herald\u2019s endorsement<\/a> for her grasp of policy and pragmatic proposals. A former aide to two sitting Democratic city Commissioners, Matteo-Salinas, a Democrat, vows to expand trolley service, pursue affordable housing purchases and establish a new \u201cwater czar\u201d position in the city, paid by resort taxes.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She raised about $63,000 between her campaign account and a little-used political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.voterfocus.com\/CampaignFinance\/candidate_pr.php?op=cv&amp;e=13&amp;c=miamidade&amp;ca=2929&amp;rellevel=3&amp;committee=Y\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Voters for Good Government<\/a>, \u00a0inclusive of a $25,000 self-loan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Lawyer Monique Pardo Pope, 44, a Republican guardian ad litem and member of the city\u2019s Commission for Women, has run a campaign emphasizing public safety, education and family services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Of $166,000 she reported raising through her campaign account and political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89216\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Miami Beach Together<\/a>, a third came from her bank account.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Pardo Pope\u2019s candidacy drew attention late last month after documentarian Billy Corben revealed that she is the daughter of former police officer Manuel Pardo, a <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/758098-monique-pardo\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">serial killer<\/a> and Nazi enthusiast who was executed for killing nine people in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She said in a statement that she forgave her father for his crimes in order to move on with her life and dedicate herself to service. Despite the controversy, Pardo Pope earned endorsements from the Jewish-affiliated Teach Florida PAC, Miami-Dade Commissioner Ren\u00e9 Garc\u00eda and former City Commissioner Jose Smith.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City Commission, Group 2<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The race for the Miami Beach Commission\u2019s Group 2 seat is the city\u2019s most contentious this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Incumbent Laura Dom\u00ednguez, a 54-year-old Democrat, is seeking re-election against real-estate investor Fred Karlton, a 65-year-old Republican-turned-independent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dom\u00ednguez, elected in 2022 to complete the term of her late partner, Commissioner Mark Samuelian, touts achievements in public safety, resiliency and fiscal management. She told the Herald she \u201cended spring-break chaos,\u201d secured police funding and advanced flood-prevention projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">She\u2019s backed by an array of unions \u2014 including the South Florida AFL-CIO, IAFF Local 1510, AFSCME Local 1554 and the Miami Beach Fraternal Order of Police, and by advocacy groups like Equality Florida, SAVE Action PAC and Ruth\u2019s List Florida.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Her tenure, however, has been rocked by political crossfire. One of her peers on the dais, Suarez, an independent, has undertaken a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article312432989.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">months-long campaign against her<\/a>, funding negative mailers and contributing $25,000 to a pro-Karlton political committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Late last month, resident Jo Manning filed <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/757843-resident-files-state-complaints-against-david-suarez-over-messages-criticizing-fellow-miami-beach-commissioner\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">complaints<\/a> with the state\u2019s elections and ethics agencies, accusing Suarez of illegally using the city seal and government letterhead to attack Dom\u00ednguez.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Laura-Dominguez-Fred-karlton.png\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-762271\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Laura-Dominguez-Fred-karlton-640x360.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>(L-R) Commissioner Laura Dominguez and her challenger, Fred Karlton. Fabi\u00e1n Basabe piled on, circulating a video clip of Dom\u00ednguez discussing a 41st Street Business Improvement District project. He accused her of \u201cbackroom grift.\u201d She called the charge \u201ca baseless smear. Her priorities for a second term include an affordable-housing trust fund, improved water quality via \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/opinion\/election-recommendations\/article312540029.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">nanobubble<\/a>\u201d technology and completion of West Avenue resiliency projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Karlton, a lifelong Beach resident and property investor, cast himself as a fiscal watchdog who will fight overdevelopment and government waste.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI\u2019m not anybody\u2019s shill,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/community\/miami-dade\/miami-beach\/article312432989.html\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">told the Herald<\/a>, adding that his 33 years in business equip him to negotiate contracts and improve efficiency. He says the city \u201cgrants too many favors to developers\u201d and wants stricter zoning oversight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His activism dates back more than a decade. In 2011, he began <a href=\"https:\/\/ethics.miamidade.gov\/library\/closed%20investigations\/2011\/k_11-78_noreiga.pdf\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">clashing with boaters<\/a> who lived onboard near his ocean-facing backyard. He ended up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/news\/boat-owners-home-owners-clash-over-anchored-liveaboards\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">traveling to Tallahassee<\/a> years later to seek legislation addressing the issue.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This year, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed legislation to empower localities to <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/739013-gov-desantis-signs-measure-giving-counties-more-power-over-boat-anchoring\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">further tighten rules<\/a> against long-term anchoring.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dominguez has raised almost $311,000 of which a third came from her bank account. Donations came through a blend of business and personal checks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Karlton\u2019s $150,000 campaign account gains were all self-given.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Group 3: Fernandez Seeks Stability<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Commissioner Alex Fernandez, a 39, is running for a second term against challenger Luidgi Mary, a former member of the city\u2019s Black Affairs Advisory Committee.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fernandez, the only openly gay member of the commission, has championed policies blending compassion and enforcement. He authored the city\u2019s \u201cText Before Tow\u201d program, which said reduced resident tows by 90%, and Miami Beach\u2019s homelessness ordinance, which Basabe argues is <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/760448-fabian-basabe-requests-state-audit-of-miami-beach-finances-contracts-homelessness-policies\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">not in compliance<\/a> with a newer state law.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Fernandez has also led efforts to clean local waters, improve flood-control infrastructure and expand tenant and condo-owner protections.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During his first term, Fernandez helped roll back late-night alcohol hours in residential areas, strengthened preservation of the Art Deco Historic District and expanded the Freebee micro-transit service.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alex-Fernandez-Luidgi-mary.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-762274 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Alex-Fernandez-Luidgi-mary-640x360.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\"  \/><\/a>(L-R) Commissioner Alex Fernandez and his lone opponent, Luidgi Mary. Images via the candidates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He was the loudest voice in local government against the <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/663801-legislature-passes-bill-easing-demolition-replacement-of-old-buildings-with-bigger-structures\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Resiliency and Safe Structures Act<\/a>, which the Legislature passed in response to the 2021 Surfside condo collapse, arguing its too-broad impacts would destroy many of Miami Beach\u2019s historic buildings and neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He and several state lawmakers, including Basabe and Miami Gardens Democratic Sen. Shevrin Jones, worked to amend the measure\u2019s language to mitigate its potentially negative impacts.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mary, a 45-year-old independent-turned-Republican, has run a modest campaign emphasizing inclusion and transparency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In addition to boilerplate priorities \u2014 stopping overdevelopment, improving public safety and standing up for small businesses \u2014 he said he wants to clean up Miami Beach\u2019s elections, end \u201cbackroom deals\u201d that favor builders over residents and crack down on abuses by short-term rental property owners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In terms of fundraising, there\u2019s a massive divide between the candidates. Fernandez has raised more than $372,000 between his campaign account and political committee, <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=89029\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">A Safer Miami Beach<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ample donations came from real estate interests, local businesses and residents from in and around Miami Beach.
