SUNRISE, Fla.\u00a0\u2013 Florida Panthers\u00a0Head Coach\u00a0Paul Maurice\u00a0is serving in his 2,000th\u00a0regular season NHL game tonight\u00a0at\u00a0Amerant\u00a0Bank Arena\u00a0vs.\u00a0the\u00a0Seattle\u00a0Kraken, joining Hockey Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman (2,141 games) as just the second head coach\u00a0in NHL history\u00a0to reach\u00a0the\u00a0milestone.<\/p>\n
The Sault St.\u00a0Marie, Ontario native\u00a0entered tonight\u2019s game vs. Seattle with 950\u00a0career\u00a0wins, the\u00a0third most in NHL history and second\u00a0most\u00a0among active head coaches. He is in his 28th\u00a0NHL season, behind only Bowman (30) for the most seasons as head coach in league history.\u00a0Maurice is\u00a0of three\u00a0coaches\u00a0ever\u00a0to earn at least 175 wins with three different franchises, joining Bowman and Darryl Sutter.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Maurice, 59,\u00a0served as head coach for the first time on Nov. 7,\u00a01995,\u00a0when his Hartford Whalers defeated the San Jose Sharks 7-3. He was 28 years,\u00a0281 days\u00a0old at the time,\u00a0making him the youngest head coach since Gary Green on Nov. 15, 1979, who was 26 years,\u00a084 days\u00a0old. Maurice is the fifth-youngest\u00a0head\u00a0coach at the time of their first game in NHL history, and he\u00a0was the youngest coach in NHL history to reach the 500, 1,000 and 1,500 games\u00a0coached\u00a0marks.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Maurice owns a\u00a0175-119-21\u00a0regular season record since becoming head coach of the Panthers prior to the 2022-23 season.\u00a0In his time with Florida, Maurice\u2019s Panthers have logged the second most shots on goal per game of any team (32.8) while allowing the seventh fewest on average (28.1). Florida\u2019s 8,266 hits during Maurice\u2019s tenure lead all clubs\u00a0in that span.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
In the Stanley Cup Playoffs, the Panthers own a league-best 45-23 record\u00a0under Maurice. Winning the Stanley Cup in each of the past two seasons, Maurice is just\u00a0the fifth head coach in NHL history to win at least two Stanley Cups through their first three seasons with a team.\u00a0<\/p>\n
