Theodore and Thelma Gibson and Verneka Sturrup Silva will soon be reflected in the very streets and public spaces they helped shape, with a portion of Franklin Avenue and a new park pool bearing their names.

Miami City Commissioners voted unanimously March 12 to designate a stretch of Franklin Avenue near the Gibsons’ historic family home as “Rev. Theodore and Thelma Gibson Way,” and to name the new aquatic facility at Elizabeth Virrick Park after Ms. Silva. The recognitions honor decades of leadership and service spanning civil rights, healthcare, education and community advocacy in Coconut Grove.

Mr. Gibson was one of Miami’s most influential civil rights leaders, as well as a faith leader and public servant. He served more than nine years on the Miami City Commission, including two terms as vice mayor, and played a central role in advancing equality in education, housing, public accommodations and civic representation during the 1950s and 1960s.

Mrs. Gibson built a legacy as a pioneering healthcare leader and community advocate. Overcoming racial barriers in nursing and medical training in the 1940s and 1950s, she went on to serve 15 years on the Jackson Health System Board, two decades on the University of Miami Board of Trustees and briefly as a Miami city commissioner in 1997. Her work helped expand access to care and strengthen the city’s healthcare infrastructure.

Together, the Gibsons’ decades of service left a generational impact on Miami and Coconut Grove, championing civil rights, healthcare access, education and civic participation. The designation of Franklin Avenue, where their family home stands, serves as a lasting tribute to that legacy.

Ms. Silva, a Miami native born and raised in Coconut Grove, devoted her life to public service through education, recreation and community advocacy. She spent more than 40 years in Miami-Dade County Public Schools as a teacher, guidance counselor and assistant principal, while also taking on leadership roles in organizations including Coconut Grove Cares and the National Alliance of Black School Educators.

She also played a role in shaping the park that will now bear her name. According to a letter from the Coconut Grove Village West Homeowners and Tenants Association, Ms. Silva worked alongside the Gibsons, Elizabeth Virrick and other residents during slum clearance efforts in the 1950s and 1960s that led to the creation of the city-owned Elizabeth Virrick Park.

The park’s original pool opened in 1970 and became a vital gathering place for mostly Black families in the West Grove, offering one of the few ways to stay cool during Miami’s summer heat. After decades of deterioration, the pool closed in 2020.

The city has since undertaken a major reconstruction, with a new aquatic facility featuring a deeper pool designed for competitive swimming and water polo, along with a splash pad and community areas. It is anticipated to reopen this month as the Verneka Sturrup Silva Aquatic Facility.

Written by Genevieve Bowen on March 25, 2026 Advertisement The legacies of three longtime Coconut Grove community leaders…

[15
225,227,226
post-205150","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-hialeah","tag-hialeah","tag-hialeah-headlines","tag-hialeah-news
["GET
