WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (CBS12) \u2014 U.S. Representative Brian Mast <\/a>(FL-21) introduced federal legislation to rename Palm Beach International Airport<\/a> as \u201cDonald J. Trump International Airport\u201d with a new location identifier, \u201cDJT.\u201d<\/p>\n

The move comes as Florida lawmakers have already taken significant steps at the state level to advance a similar renaming proposal<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The bill directs the appropriate federal agencies to update all references to the new name upon enactment. It further instructs the Federal Aviation Administration to coordinate with organizations such as the International Air Transport Association to pursue the adoption of the airport code DJT.<\/p>\n

Rep. Mast said the designation recognizes President Donald J. Trump\u2019s longstanding connection to Palm Beach County as well as his national legacy.<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Donald J. Trump\u2019s impact on our nation will transcend our time\u2014a historic legacy of dedication and commitment toward the American people. He\u2019s called Palm Beach County ‘home’ for many years, and this designation reflects our gratitude for his public service and leadership,\u201d Mast said.<\/p>\n

Palm Beach International Airport\u2014an essential economic anchor for the region and a destination for millions of travelers annually\u2014has been the subject of increasing legislative attention in Florida. Earlier this year, the Florida House voted 81\u201330 in favor of renaming the facility President Donald J. Trump International Airport, advancing legislation (HB 919<\/a>) that aligned with a similar bill moving through the state Senate (SB 706<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Supporters in the Florida Legislature noted the airport\u2019s proximity to the President\u2019s residence. \u201cThis is the President’s hometown; he lives five miles away from the airport,\u201d said Rep. Meg Weinberger<\/a>, R-Palm Beach Gardens. Other Republican lawmakers cited infrastructure investments made under President Trump, arguing the recognition was deserved.<\/p>\n

Debate around the state proposal has included concerns over trademark issues after DTTM Operations LLC, a Trump Organization\u2013managed entity, filed intent-to-use applications for the names \u201cPresident Donald J. Trump International Airport,\u201d \u201cDonald J. Trump International Airport,\u201d and \u201cDJT.\u201d Legislators noted the filings could affect licensing and financing agreements. However, Rep. Weinberger said the Trump family agreed to waive trademark claims related to the airport renaming.<\/p>\n

The state Senate\u2019s budget proposal included $2.75 million to cover sign changes, branding updates, and technology adjustments tied to rebranding the airport. Additional funding requests outlined expenses for announcements, emergency messaging, equipment rebranding, and uniforms to ensure full implementation of the name change.<\/p>\n

The Florida proposal also requires approval from the FAA and an agreement between Palm Beach County and the trademark holder to authorize commercial use of the Trump name.<\/p>\n

Rep. Mast\u2019s federal bill, introduced Tuesday, would independently codify the name \u201cDonald J. Trump International Airport\u201d at the national level and direct federal coordination on updating naming standards and aviation identifiers.<\/p>\n
