TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Tallahassee Southside is getting more colorful thanks to new murals being funded in part by the city\u2019s tax dollars.<\/p>\n
In a partnership between Knight Creative Communities Initiative (KCCI), City of Tallahassee Frenchtown\/Southside Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) and SoMo Walls, 8 large-scale murals are being set up along the South Monroe Street corridor, per a press release.<\/p>\n
The murals are being painted on shipping containers in the SoMo Walls parking lot.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday, KCCI announced that seven artists are completing the murals with $30,000 in taxpayer funds. This comes after a dismissed ethics complaint<\/a> and selection process.<\/a><\/p>\n Painting is set to be underway as soon as this Saturday.<\/p>\n According to a press release, each of the murals is expected to reflect a \u201cunique story\u201d and themes of statehood, civic identity, Florida nature and others. <\/p>\n More Tallahassee news:<\/p>\n Mayor John Daily said in a press release that public art can \u201cstrengthen neighborhoods, spark pride, and elevate Tallahassee\u2019s identity.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cThis initiative brings new energy to the Southside and showcases the incredible creativity in Tallahassee.\u201d<\/p>\n Below are the artists\u2019 names and their artwork.<\/p>\n Michael Crowne – Wings of ContinuumMyah Freeman – Tallahassee LegendMatthew Forrest – King of the JungleSam McCoy & Meghan Mick – Wingbeats Daybreak & Wingbeats TwilightTaylor Shaw – Statua LibertatisAmanda VanStratum – Swipe Right on Wild & Game on Gator: Marsh Maze<\/p>\n During the announcement, artists shared their sketches, talked about their themes and celebrated what will be a large art installation just south of our state capitol building.<\/p>\n One of the Tallahassee artists, Matthew Forest, who goes by the name britseo, said that it\u2019s a special installation.<\/p>\n \u201dWe have a mix, but I think that there\u2019s something special to the local (art) scene in Tallahassee that gives it its own personality and flavor, not that you won\u2019t find anywhere else,\u201d Britseo said.<\/p>\n Each of the murals was chosen by an independent selection committee, and each theme relates, in some way, to Tallahassee.<\/p>\n Tune in to Eyewitness News at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. for the full story.
