The trio will participate in the People\u2019s Choice Barbecue Cookoff.<\/p>\n<p>            Courtesy of KechThis, Inc.<\/p>\n<p>More than a decade after it closed for renovations, People\u2019s Bar-B-Q in Overtown will soon be home to a new restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>And the people will decide which of three restaurants \u2014 Extra Butter Miami competing as People\u2019s Outlaw BBQ, Rosie\u2019s competing as Black Pit BBQ, and McKay\u2019s Catering competing as Queen of the Kitchen \u2014 will operate inside the historic restaurant.<\/p>\n<p>The People\u2019s Choice Barbecue Cookoff is on Saturday at the 9th Street Pedestrian Mall.<\/p>\n<p>For five decades, the Overtown barbecue restaurant served as a cornerstone for Black culture, fellowship and entrepreneurship. The Southeast Overtown\/Park West Community Redevelopment Agency, which owns and will lease the beloved barbeque spot, is hoping to reinvigorate the space, bringing it back to its glory days.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe People\u2019s Choice Barbecue Cookoff represents our commitment to honoring Overtown\u2019s history while building its future,\u201d James McQueen, Southeast Overtown\/Park West CRA\u2019s executive director, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>George \u201cPop\u201dLewis Sr., the first Black pharmacist in Miami, owned People\u2019s Pharmacy, which eventually became People\u2019s Barbeque, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/sports\/high-school\/prep-miami-dade\/article1958530.html#storylink=cpy\">according to the Miami Herald archives<\/a>. The space sits at 350 NW Eighth St. in Miami and had been closed until recently for renovations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAwarding a lease at the Historic People\u2019s Barbecue Building ensures that this treasured space remains in the hands of entrepreneurs who understand its significance to this community,\u201d said Miami City Commissioner and Chairwoman Christine King, who also chairs the Southeast Overtown Park West CRA.<\/p>\n<p>The three restaurants in the cookoff will be rated by a panel of judges weighing their specialty cut meats.
