MIAMI (WSVN) – City of Miami Police officers have released bodycam footage that showed the moments when a man drove his car into an officer<\/a> near Bayfront Park last year.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred while the officer was directing traffic at a music festival on Biscayne Boulevard and Northeast Second Street in Miami around 7 p.m. on May 25, 2025.<\/p>\n

The officer then put his hand up to signal a black BMW to stop.<\/p>\n

Instead, the driver hit the gas and kept going, according to investigators.<\/p>\n

The driver was later identified as Menelek Emmanuel Clarke. <\/p>\n

Cell phone video<\/a> showed the officer on top of the man\u2019s car, shooting through the windshield several times as the car continued to drive forward.<\/p>\n

The BMW then hits a police cruiser.<\/p>\n

The driver, who was shot in the leg, shoulder, and side, managed to exit the car and started walking, with blood on his shirt.<\/p>\n

\u201cGet on the (expletive) ground!\u201d said the officer.<\/p>\n

He eventually surrenders to police with his hands in the air and is taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n

Video posted to social media showed Clarke being taken away by police and taken to the hospital.<\/p>\n

Body camera footage shows officers on the scene wondering who shot the man.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo he\u2019s right here, he\u2019s right here,\u201d said the officer involved in the shooting.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know the guy who shot him?\u201d asked another officer.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo, I shot him,\u201d said the officer.<\/p>\n

The officer was placed in a police car and was asked to stay during the on-site investigation.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe hit me with his car,\u201d said the officer to other police officers.<\/p>\n

\u201cTake a deep breath, and then just sit in your vehicle for right now, OK?\u201d said an officer.<\/p>\n

Earlier this month, the Miami-Dade State Attorney\u2019s Office wrapped up its investigation into the officer\u2019s actions. In a letter to the Chief of Police, officials said that \u201cthe officer was legally justified in the use of deadly force.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the closeout memo, the office also said that Clarke\u2019s actions \u201cconstitute a clear Aggravated battery on a Law Enforcement Officer,\u201d and that the officer was \u201clegally justified in firing his weapon in defense of his person.\u201d<\/p>\n

Clarke faces charges of reckless driving, resisting arrest, and aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, among other charges.<\/p>\n

Clarke\u2019s sister, Sherylann, was seated in the passenger\u2019s seat of the car and told 7News that the incident was a misunderstanding and that her brother never meant to hit the officer.<\/p>\n

According to court documents, his trial is set for April.<\/p>\n
