An investigator with the Plantation Police Department authored a probable cause affidavit in the case on Dec. 23, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">In that affidavit, a detective said Darryl Okeefe Efford, then 35, was driving 100 mph in his 2019 Subaru WRX \u2015 a high-performance compact car \u2015 west when he T-boned a 2013 Mercedes with two people inside as its driver tried to turn left onto Northwest 43rd Avenue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The crash killed one person and injured another. The victims\u2019 identities were redacted from a police report posted to the Broward Clerk of Courts website.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police said data from the airbag control module showed that Efford was going more than 85 mph five seconds before impact and had sped up \u2015 at \u201c100% acceleration\u201d \u2015 to 100 mph about a second before the wreck.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">The speed limit on that stretch of Sunrise Boulevard is 45 mph.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">According to PPD, the results of a traffic crash reconstruction by a consulting firm \u201crevealed Efford\u2019s actions displayed willful and wanton disregard for the safety of others on the road.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Police said the firm also performed a time-distance analysis concluding that if Efford had been driving at the speed limit, the crash \u201cwould not have occurred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Regarding the other driver, authorities said the firm concluded that \u201ca non-impaired and non-distracted driver would have made the same left turn that (he or she) attempted to make.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph\">Efford pleaded not guilty after turning himself in on Tuesday.
