MIAMI \u2014 Miami police say a man became \u201cirate\u201d at a group of teenagers \u201criding their bikes in the street\u201d near his home in the city\u2019s Allapattah neighborhood on Tuesday, eventually leading him to shoot one of them from his pickup truck, wounding the boy.<\/p>\n
Officers arrested the 35-year-old accused gunman, Yony Campbell, on an assortment of charges \u2015 including attempted murder \u2015 on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Investigators said the shooting happened just before 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the 1800 block of Northwest 18th Terrace.<\/p>\n
Police said the three teens, aged 15 through 17, were riding their bikes on Northwest 22nd Avenue when Campbell confronted and \u201cattempted to fight\u201d them.<\/p>\n
According to an arrest report from the Miami Police Department, the boys told investigators that Campbell followed them as they tried to get away, leading one of them to throw a rock at his truck. Police said Campbell then took out a gun and fired several shots, striking that boy in the leg.<\/p>\n
Authorities said police responded after getting a ShotSpotter notification about the gunfire as the group of teens rode to Northwest 17th Avenue and 41st Street in the Liberty City neighborhood, where the victim was able to flag down an MPD officer on patrol. Medics took the boy to Jackson Memorial Hospital\u2019s Ryder Trauma Center.<\/p>\n
Police said they found Campbell at his home in the 2100 block of Northwest 18th Street Wednesday night. According to the report, he claimed the \u201cmasked\u201d boys had cut him off and claimed they kicked his truck after he honked at them. He said he fired two shots into the ground after one of the teens threw a glass bottle at his truck, claiming that the boys had been \u201cfollowing him\u201d and stopped after he opened fire.<\/p>\n
But police said they were able to obtain surveillance video showing \u201cthe victim and witnesses being followed by a white pickup around the block several times,\u201d corroborating their account.<\/p>\n
Police said Campbell then admitted to driving to his cousin\u2019s house in the 2900 block of West 80th Street in Hialeah, \u201cconcealed the firearm inside a work glove and discarded it in a dumpster.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to the report, an MPD detective went to the dumpster and found the glove-wrapped gun.<\/p>\n
Police arrested Campbell on charges of attempted murder, aggravated child abuse, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, using a firearm in the commission of a felony and improper exhibition of a firearm.<\/p>\n
As of Thursday afternoon, he was being held in the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center with a bond listed in online jail records as \u201cto be set.\u201d<\/p>\n
