{"id":20902,"date":"2025-10-26T04:46:30","date_gmt":"2025-10-26T04:46:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/20902\/"},"modified":"2025-10-26T04:46:30","modified_gmt":"2025-10-26T04:46:30","slug":"local-congressman-asking-utilities-financial-institutions-to-step-up-amid-shutdown-action-news-jax","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/20902\/","title":{"rendered":"Local congressman asking utilities, financial institutions to step up amid shutdown \u2013 Action News Jax"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JACKSONVILLE, Fla. \u2014 A local congressman is calling on Northeast Florida utility companies and financial institutions to step up and help out amid the ongoing government shutdown. <\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Congressman Aaron Bean (R-FL, 4th District) sent a letter to three major utilities in Northeast Florida and VyStar Credit Union, urging them to do what they can to mitigate the hardships inflicted on military members, air traffic controllers, and other federal employees impacted by the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">He argued that service disruptions, late fees, and adverse credit reporting could further harm those workers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/live-breaking\/\" target=\"_blank\">&gt;&gt;&gt; STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE &lt;&lt;&lt;<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">With the shutdown already in its 24th day and no end in sight, Bean told Action News Jax the number of workers and service members feeling the pain is growing every day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cThey\u2019re working, not getting paid, and many live paycheck to paycheck. So, we have to be so sensitive. And I\u2019ve asked the financial institutions, our utility companies, let\u2019s be sensitive, let\u2019s be real,\u201d said Bean.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">And the impacts aren\u2019t going unnoticed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">JEA told Action News Jax that call volumes have increased in recent weeks, but it does not ask customers specifically whether their requests for assistance are related to the government shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">The utility is currently directing those in need to go through its regular payment solutions portal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">But JEA did suggest it\u2019s open to discussing what more could be done to help.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cOur Government Relations team has been in touch with Congressman Bean\u2019s office about his request,\u201d said a JEA spokesperson in an emailed statement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">VyStar, on the other hand, said it is seeing more inquiries directly related to the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">[DOWNLOAD: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actionnewsjax.com\/mobile-apps\/\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks<\/a>]<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cVyStar was founded in 1952 in NAS Jacksonville, specifically for the military and our civilian employees. So, we\u2019re here for them and will make sure we get through this tough time with them,\u201d said VyStar Military Affairs Manager Sean Dougherty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">Dougherty explained the credit union has been offering 90-day interest-free loans, payment and mortgage deferments, and fee waivers for military members and federal employees since the start of the shutdown.<\/p>\n<p class=\"default__StyledText-sc-tl066j-0 jsuuLb body-paragraph\">\u201cAnyone that\u2019s active duty is automatically eligible for our interest-free loans. That\u2019s just an automatic, doesn\u2019t even matter if they got paid or not,\u201d said Dougherty. \u201dAnd those that are civilian employees, like I said, we\u2019ll just do a quick check for verification whether it\u2019s the furlough letter or just showing they didn\u2019t receive a direct deposit.
