Over 400 protestors packed into Tropical Park to join one of more than 3,000 \u201cNo Kings\u201d demonstrations planned across the country \u2014 surpassing the turnout of the previous two national protest days. In South Florida alone, more than a dozen events were scheduled.<\/p>\n

Saturday\u2019s main protest in West Miami-Dade also was more planned than the past ones, with a stage, a choir and people lined up along Bird Road chanting and singing as they held signs with slogans.<\/p>\n

Speakers from local protest groups took the stage to loudly condemn President Donald Trump. Among them was Ana Navarro-C\u00e1rdenas, a political analyst frequently featured on CNN, and U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin of Maryland, ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee .<\/p>\n

Raskin energized the crowd with a classic Miami greeting: \u201cHola, Miami; Hola, Florida!\u201d He started his speech in Spanish.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are not our king, and we will never be your servants,\u201d he said in Spanish about Trump. \u201cWe don\u2019t have kings here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Navarro-C\u00e1rdenas shouted similar sentiments to the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou know what\u2019s going to happen in November? There is going to be a change in Washington because Americans are sick and tired of Republicans …. There is going to be people that investigate the s— that needs to be investigated.\u201d<\/p>\n

No counter protestors supporting Trump, except for the occasional car honk and middle finger, showed at the \u201cNo Kings\u201d event.<\/p>\n

The most recent No Kings protests in October, a gathering at the Torch of Friendship in downtown Miami, drew thousands of participants, and organizers expected the Tropical Park event to be the largest of the day in South Florida.<\/p>\n

Cindy Lerner, co-leader of the Indivisible Action Team Miami-Dade and former mayor of Pinecrest, said the group could not return to the Torch of Friendship because of this weekend\u2019s Ultra Music Festival.<\/p>\n

Among the hundreds in attendance was 27-year-old Adrian Aviles, holding a large American flag swaying in the wind from a PVC pipe. Although his parents are more involved activists, Aviles chose Saturday as his first rally against Trump and his administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s time to voice my opinion and be a part of where I think I belong on this side of the fence,\u201d he said. \u201cI felt I needed to come because of what\u2019s going on with Iran and the recent imperialism that we seem to be enforcing with Nicaragua and Venezuela, some of these countries that deserve their own democracy and not us stepping in and being the authoritarians.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rhoane Latvis, 82, has seen many presidents come and ago, supporting her fair share and not agreeing with others. But she said Trump\u2019s actions in his first and second terms led her to join a protest rally for the first time in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrump is the first president that wants to be a king and I really don\u2019t think that\u2019s right,\u201d she said. \u201cWe got our independence in 1776, and we are going to be 250 years old. I want us, this great country, to stay independent.\u201d<\/p>\n

Javier Del Rio, 35, walked Tropical Park in his old military uniform that he has since modified with flowers woven into his beret and painted motifs and mantras on his back, one of which read, \u201cI will fight no more forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

Del Rio has spent the last 20 weeks attending prayer vigils outside Alligator Alcatraz, an immigration detention facility located at Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport inside Big Cypress National Preserve. He condemned what he described as the barbaric conditions there.<\/p>\n

\u201cI cannot stress enough that the conditions at Alligator Alcatraz are akin to a concentration camp. In fact, it is a concentration camp sitting in our backyard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Del Rio served in the Marine Corps reserves for three years and transferred to active duty in the Army for six years. He was deployed to Afghanistan in 2017 for nine months and said he has worked hard to \u201crecover the pieces of myself that I sacrificed along the way.\u201d<\/p>\n

He felt it was paramount that people come out Saturday to protest.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s a big difference between nationalism and a patriotism, Nationalism is excusing every action of the state no matter what it does,\u201d he said. \u201cA patriot demands better of the state and chooses to hold it accountable to its ideals. We need patriots right now.\u201d<\/p>\n
