CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. (Saturday) \u2014 Three people, including two young children, were killed in a violent crash on I-75 Friday evening, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.<\/p>\n
Troopers say it happened just before 6 p.m. on northbound I-75 near mile marker 153.<\/p>\n
Investigators say a driver traveling southbound at a high rate of speed veered off the roadway, crossed the median, and entered the northbound lanes, crashing into another vehicle.<\/p>\n
The impact was so severe, troopers say the vehicle split into two pieces.<\/p>\n
A 25-year-old man from North Fort Myers was pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
Two children, ages 5 and 6, both from Fort Myers, were also killed. One died at the scene. The other was airlifted to Tampa General Hospital with critical injuries and later died.<\/p>\n
The driver who crossed the median, a 28-year-old man from New York, suffered serious injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital.<\/p>\n
Troopers say that vehicle overturned and came to rest on the shoulder.<\/p>\n
The crash remains under investigation, and charges are pending.<\/p>\n
