ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) \u2014 About a week after Gov. Brian Kemp signed legislation to suspend Georgia\u2019s gas tax for 60 days, the state\u2019s top legal authority is threatening to prosecute businesses that don\u2019t comply. <\/p>\n
On Saturday, Attorney General Chris Carr said any gas station that doesn\u2019t deduct the gas tax from its prices will be investigated and potentially brought to court. <\/p>\n

Brian Kemp signs 60-day gas tax suspension, $1.2 billion tax rebate bills<\/a><\/p>\n \u201cWe commend Governor Kemp and our partners in the legislature for passing this critical measure to lower costs at the pump,\u201d Carr said in a statement. \u201cAny business that purposefully fails to comply with the law will be investigated immediately, and we will not hesitate to prosecute if warranted. Now is not the time to play games at the expense of Georgia consumers.\u201d<\/p>\n Introduced by lawmakers and signed by the governor on March 20, the bill cuts 33.3 cents per gallon for regular fuel and 37.3 cents per gallon for diesel. According to Carr, failing to do so constitutes an \u201cunfair or deceptive act,\u201d violating the state\u2019s Fair Business Practices Act of 1975. <\/p>\n Government officials suspended the gas tax as the war in Iran continues to drive up oil prices worldwide. According to AAA<\/a>, the average gas price per gallon is $3.66 as of Saturday.
