CASEY BRADLEY GENT <\/p>\n<p>            <a class=\"prev next_prev_slide\" onclick=\"plusSlides(-1)\"><\/a><br \/>\n            <a class=\"next next_prev_slide\" onclick=\"plusSlides(1)\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>            [expand]<\/p>\n<p>        close<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n    &#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Camaraderie and brotherhood. <\/p>\n<p>These two words represented the spirit on display at Cape Coral Harney Point VFW Post 8463 as the post celebrated its 60th anniversary at a day-long celebration Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll of the veterans who are members here, served in a foreign conflict,\u201d said Post Commander Rob Williams, who explained why VFW posts are unique. \u201cUnlike American Legion posts, who are open to everyone, the VFW requires that members served during wartime.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On hand for Sunday\u2019s event were veterans who served during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom and Operation Iraqi Freedom. <\/p>\n<p>In addition to burgers, dogs and a free meal for Vietnam vets to mark National Vietnam Veterans Day, Williams ordered two special cakes for the celebration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a long-standing tradition for the oldest VFW member and the youngest VFM member to cut the first cake slice,\u201d Williams said. <\/p>\n<p>He explained that the cake cutting represents a \u201cpassing of wisdom and responsibility from one generation to the next.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Jim Weidel, a veteran in his 80s, and Ben Santana, a veteran who completed his military service is 2004, shared the first cake-cutting formalities. <\/p>\n<p>Cape Coral Mayor John Gunter and Councilmember Laurie Lehmann shared the second cake cutting. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis anniversary is a special event in a special city,\u201d Gunter said. \u201cCape Coral is a Purple Heart City, and we have been one for a very long time.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Purple Heart cities are municipalities committed to the local recognition and honor of military personnel wounded or killed in combat.<\/p>\n<p>Other attendees included City Councilmembers Jennifer Nelson-Lastra and Joe Kilraine and the VFW motorcycle riders group.<\/p>\n<p>Bob Sutter, an Army veteran and VFW trustee, said the riders group raised $1,700 for veterans and their families. <\/p>\n<p>And, of course, there were members from multiple branches of the U.S. military who turned out to mark Post 8463\u2019s 60th anniversary. <\/p>\n<p>Carlos Kelly, who served as a Marine, said it was an honor to spend a couple of hours around other vets. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cServing has been one of the greatest honors I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d Kelly said. \u201cOur military stands for the greater good. I learned about camaraderie.
