While the astronauts orbit the Moon, much of the technology enabling the mission is being built in Central Florida \u2014 notably at Honeywell\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\/pinellas\/clearwater\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Clearwater <\/a>facility.<\/p>\n<p>   Honeywell\u2019s legacy in space engineering <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Honeywell has been a cornerstone of American aerospace for decades. The company first supported the Mercury missions, providing navigation and environmental control systems.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">During Gemini, Honeywell supplied critical electronics and control systems. For Apollo, they delivered cockpit instruments and life-support systems. Their contributions continued through the Space Shuttle, the International Space Station and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/news\/looking-ahead-artemis-ii-second-space-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">now the Artemis missions<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/vlcsnap-2026-03-31-15h47m33s050.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Kendall Bjorge, senior program director at Honeywell, has decades of experience in space engineering.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;We\u2019ve been here since the \u201950s. We\u2019ve been on every manned mission. Our work spans Mercury, Gemini, Apollo, the Space Shuttle, ISS and now Artemis. It\u2019s been an incredible journey,&#8221; Bjorge said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Bjorge oversees development of the Orion spacecraft\u2019s most critical systems, including navigation, vehicle management computers and cockpit interfaces. He emphasizes Honeywell\u2019s attention to detail and commitment to astronaut safety.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;There\u2019s the crew. The crew\u2019s here. We take very seriously that there are human lives involved. Every display, every hand controller, every switch is built with that in mind,&#8221; Bjorge said.<\/p>\n<p> Technical Highlights of Honeywell\u2019s Contributions <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Honeywell engineers in Clearwater are responsible for designing, building and testing components for the SLS rocket and Orion capsule. Among them:<\/p>\n<p> Main engine controller for RS-25 Rocket: Coordinates thrust and safety parameters for the SLS.Vehicle management computers: Two per Orion capsule, handling onboard communication and telemetry to Earth.Navigation systems: Triple-redundant units ensuring Orion follows its lunar trajectory with precision.Cockpit panels and hand controllers: Designed to prevent accidental activation and allow precise control during docking and maneuvers. <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/vlcsnap-2026-03-31-15h47m39s988.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;We started the Orion program here in Clearwater in 2006. Every piece of hardware \u2014 from cockpit displays to navigation boxes \u2014 is built, tested and delivered here. We\u2019re 85% complete with Artemis IV hardware already, and we\u2019re building hardware through Artemis IX,&#8221; Bjorge said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Local perspective:<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The Clearwater complex employs 2,500 people, ranging from Ph.D.-level aerospace engineers to high school graduates skilled in hardware assembly. Bjorge underscores the diverse talent.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;We have everything from classic rocket scientists with Ph.D.s to high school grads and GED holders working on this program. Some of them do precision soldering on circuit boards that go directly into critical spacecraft systems,&#8221; Bjorge said.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Local suppliers and machinists also contribute to the Artemis program.<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/vlcsnap-2026-03-31-15h48m32s291.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;We\u2019ll send the print for this plate up to Oldsmar, and they\u2019ll fasten it together,&#8221; Bjorge said. &#8220;It\u2019s a full ecosystem of local businesses supporting space exploration.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Dr. Phil Metzger adds that Central Florida\u2019s aerospace cluster strengthens the U.S. space program.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;Having these capabilities here \u2014 the talent, the factories, the logistical infrastructure \u2014 it\u2019s what allows us to think bigger, faster and safer about lunar missions and beyond,&#8221; Metzger said.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Big picture view:<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Honeywell\u2019s work goes beyond Artemis II.
