{"id":214884,"date":"2026-04-01T18:57:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T18:57:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/214884\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T18:57:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T18:57:10","slug":"fernandez-cites-fbi-warning-on-cuba-espionage-threat-miami","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/214884\/","title":{"rendered":"Fernandez cites FBI warning on Cuba espionage threat | Miami"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Federal authorities have long identified Cuba as an active intelligence threat to the United States, citing decades of espionage cases involving agents operating inside the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>Miami-Dade County Tax Collector Dariel Fernandez issued <a href=\"https:\/\/mdctaxcollector.gov\/blog\/statement-from-tax-collector-dariel-fernandez-fbi-warns-that-cuba-represents-a-real-espionage-threat-to-the-united-states-a-dictatorship-that-continues-to-target-our-nation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">a statement<\/a> Tuesday highlighting what he described as the continuing national security threat posed by Cuba\u2019s intelligence operations against the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Fernandez pointed to federal warnings and past espionage cases involving Cuba, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/history\/famous-cases\/ana-montes-cuba-spy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Ana Bel\u00e9n Montes<\/a> and former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/former-us-ambassador-and-national-security-council-official-admits-secretly-acting-agent\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Ambassador V\u00edctor Manuel Rocha<\/a>, both of whom were tied to long-running Cuban intelligence activity inside the U.S. government.<\/p>\n<p>The FBI states that it protects the United States from the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.fbi.gov\/investigate\/counterintelligence\/global-threat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">hostile intelligence activities of Cuba<\/a>\u201d and says those activities can include espionage, foreign influence operations and other threats.<\/p>\n<p>In the Rocha case, the U.S. Department of Justice said the former diplomat pleaded guilty in 2024 to secretly acting for decades as an agent of the Cuban government. In that same case, FBI Miami Special Agent in Charge Jeffrey B.
