{"id":214933,"date":"2026-04-01T19:45:13","date_gmt":"2026-04-01T19:45:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/214933\/"},"modified":"2026-04-01T19:45:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-01T19:45:13","slug":"excellence-elevated-new-buildings-to-transform-campus-accelerate-fius-bold-vision-for-2030","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/214933\/","title":{"rendered":"Excellence elevated: New buildings to transform campus, accelerate FIU\u2019s bold vision for 2030"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>CasaCuba<\/p>\n<p>To honor Miami\u2019s history and the deep Cuban American roots in the community, FIU is creating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/casacuba.fiu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">CasaCuba<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 a multidimensional cultural and academic center that facilitates the study of Cuban heritage, history, research and culture.<\/p>\n<p>The\u00a0Benjam\u00edn Le\u00f3n Jr.\u00a0CasaCuba building will be a 43,000-square-foot facility that will have exhibition space to showcase FIU\u2019s Cuba-related collections and will house classrooms and academic space. CasaCuba will be a vibrant home that invites visitors from across the globe \u2014 and from within the community \u2014 to gather, exchange ideas, find inspiration and preserve the story of the Cuban diaspora and its impact on South Florida.<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Ambassador to Spain Benjam\u00edn Le\u00f3n Jr., who is an honorary alumnus of FIU, gifted $10 million to help build the\u00a0facility.\u00a0CasaCuba has also received grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the James S. and John L. Knight Foundation. Jorge Mas, one of the most prominent Cuban American business leaders in the country, also made a $5 million gift to\u00a0CasaCuba.<\/p>\n<p>The groundbreaking ceremony for CasaCuba will take place later this year.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/ext_casacuba_drop-off.jpg\" alt=\"rendering of CasaCuba \" width=\"800\" height=\"350\"\/><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1_casacuba-collage.jpg\" alt=\"Renderings of CasaCuba\" width=\"800\" height=\"704\"\/><\/p>\n<p>As Cuba stands at a critical moment in its history \u2014 with hope for a transition to democracy \u2014 FIU\u2019s expertise in scholarship about Cuba will be of particular significance. FIU recently announced a new initiative aimed at supporting Cuba\u2019s transition to democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Under the leadership of President Jeanette M.
