FOX 13&#8217;s Ariel Plasencia reports.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">TAMPA, Fla. &#8211; If you\u2019ve spent any time outside lately, you may have noticed a tiny, fuzzy, uninvited guest covering cars, patio furniture, or local park benches.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-f1afc186=\"\">What we know:<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The insects are tussock moth caterpillars, which are native to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fox13news.com\/tag\/us\/fl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Florida<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;They&#8217;ve always lived here,&#8221; explained Akito Kawahara, director of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera and Biodiversity at the University of Florida. &#8220;We&#8217;re living so close to their oak trees that they like it. This is why we have this sort of battle in the spring.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">The caterpillars are feasting in the oak trees, so now, they\u2019re looking for a nesting site to become a cocoon. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/vlcsnap-2026-04-01-16h22m10s196.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">And they aren\u2019t overly picky about where they do this \u2014 a trash can, a car tire, or the side of your house will do just fine.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;This is the peak season right now when you see all this stuff happening, and they&#8217;re moving around,&#8221; Kawahara added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Dig deeper:<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Tussock moth caterpillars have a unique appearance: a reddish head, long black hair, and four dense tufts of hair on their backs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">They might look cute and furry, but those hairs are a defense mechanism designed to ward off predators.<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">&#8220;It&#8217;s called uricating hair. It&#8217;s basically hair that\u2019s a little bit like a needle,&#8221; says Kawahara. &#8220;It can go into your skin, and some people have reactions toward them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/vlcsnap-2026-04-01-16h22m40s666.png\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" fetchpriority=\"auto\" data-v-2fe2fe3e=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WTVT\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-f1afc186=\"\">What you can do:<\/p>\n<p data-v-f1afc186=\"\">Experts are warning residents to keep their distance from these critters.
