TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee grand jury voted not to investigate water quality concerns, according to the Tallahassee Region Environmental Group (TREG) and the state attorney.

According to a press release from TREG, the group submitted a petition for a grand jury review relating to the degradation of water quality in the community in February.

In that petition, TREG requested a review and issuance of a final report of the City of Tallahassee’s Sewage Phase II System Infiltration Project which is meant to address large amounts of storm and groundwater getting into the city’s sewage collection system. TREG said the water infiltrating the system can overwhelm it, causing “massive sewage spills.”

The summary of TREG’s concerns was presented to a grand jury by State Attorney Jack Campbell on Wednesday, according to TREG. After deliberation, the grand jury voted not to pursue TREG’s investigation, Campbell confirmed.

TREG said the decision is disappointing to “not only TREG’s efforts to increase transparency from the City of Tallahassee but, also, address each of these and many other water quality concerns.”

President of TREG, Terry Ryan called the decision concerning to not only those in Tallahassee, but surrounding counties.

“It is truly concerning that fellow citizens serving the current Grand Jury session have voted not to investigate these concerns,” Ryan said. “Maybe they were not fully aware of on-going water quality concerns or are currently overwhelmed with other past, current and future Grand Jury investigations, or other reasons.”

Ryan said TREG is considering re-submitting its petition before the next session.

WCTV reached out to Campbell who confirmed the grand jury’s decision and said he could not comment further on the matter.

Other environmental groups have recently raised concerns over water quality in the area. Several doctors, geologists and local commissioners called for a study of the city’s wastewater field for PFAS.

To keep up with the latest news as it develops, follow WCTV on Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Nextdoor and X (Twitter).

Have a news tip or see an error?
