Taryn Sabia, the assistant dean of research at the University of South Florida\u2019s\u00a0College of Art, Design and Performance, announced her candidacy for Tampa mayor on March 2.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Since coming to\u00a0USF in 2014, Sabia has taught graduate-level courses focused on urban design policy, climate change, sustainability, urban transportation systems and\u00a0more.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia is the co-founder of Urban Charette \u2014\u00a0an organization that focuses on educating community leaders on innovative community planning and design.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Founded in 2007, Urban Charette have hosted\u00a0numerous\u00a0workshops and community events to that end.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia also worked as a fellow with the Rhode Island State Senate, advising on policies pertinent to urban planning and design.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shortly after announcing her candidacy, Sabia went on\u00a0air with\u00a0Creative Loafing\u2019s\u00a0Ray Roa,\u00a0stating\u00a0how her\u00a0expertise\u00a0can help address current residents\u2019 grievances with Tampa\u2019s rapid urban development.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to work with and have a balance with development \u2014 buildings and older developments age out, and those things do have to be replaced,\u201d Sabia said. \u201cBeing able to understand what good development or re-development looks like and be able to plan and get out in front of it is an important factor for all of our communities.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Tampa is currently home to 79 buildings and districts that are part of the National Register of Historic Places.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\"\"In recent years, several hundred-plus-year-old buildings have been destroyed\u00a0to make way for high-rise developments downtown, including the former\u00a0Tarr Furniture Co. building<\/a>, formerly\u00a0located\u00a0at 520 N Tampa Street. The property is slated to become the future home of the\u00a0One Tampa\u00a0tower.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia stressed the importance of involving community members in her prospective decision-making processes as mayor,\u00a0stating\u00a0that it is important to \u201cprovide for the people that are here\u00a0now.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia joins an increasingly crowded race in Tampa\u2019s 2027 mayoral race, which now includes\u00a0Ryan J. Edwards, Anthony Gilbert Jr., Alan Jared Henderson, Lynn\u00a0Hurtak, Julie Magill, Tres L.\u00a0Rodmon, Reginald B. Strachan and former mayor Bob Buckhorn.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Many candidates have gone on record\u00a0stating\u00a0that they aim to tackle Tampa\u2019s affordability issues as well as expanding public transportation services, much like Sabia.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia\u2019s\u00a0campaign is centered around addressing Tampa\u2019s rise in housing costs through implementing thoughtful urban planning strategies\u00a0to expand Tampa\u2019s public transportation system, including HART bus lines and\u00a0TECO streetcars.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Sabia and her team have\u00a0established\u00a0that\u00a0in order to\u00a0address Tampa\u2019s needs, they will implement thoughtful urban planning strategies and apply her professional experience in the field to improve life in the city.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
