Adam and Brittany Spohn were sentenced to 20 years on child abuse charges(Leon County Jail)<\/p>\nTALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – A Tallahassee couple was sentenced to 20 years in prison after pleading no contest to aggravated child abuse charges, according to court documents. <\/p>\n
Adam and Brittany Spohn brought three children to the hospital at the request of of the Department of Children and Families in 2024, a probable cause affidavit revealed. <\/p>\n

Officers arrived at the hospital after learning the children were \u201csuffering from obvious signs of neglect.\u201d <\/p>\n
The children were seven, five and three years old. <\/p>\n
Before going to the emergency room, court documents show the defendants took one of the children to an endocrinologist appointment \u201cregarding her failure to thrive.\u201d They told the doctor the child had a regular diet and would eat large quantities. They also said they started to supplement the child\u2019s diet with PediaSure. <\/p>\n
During the exam, the doctor recorded the child was \u201cseverely malnourished\u201d and \u201cappeared pale,\u201d according to court documents. The child was also noted to have a low weight, loose skin, a Vitamin D deficiency, anemia and had \u201cminimal to no weight gain\u201d for two years.<\/p>\n
DCF was contacted following this exam, which is what lead the Spohns to take all three children to the emergency room. <\/p>\n
During the investigation, officers observed the children all appeared thin \u201cto the point where their bones were visible.\u201d <\/p>\n
A doctor conducted interviews with the children as part of the investigation. According to court documents, one of the children said they were healthy and that she gets \u201cthree cups of blended food a day\u201d and if she asks for more their parents will say no. <\/p>\n

The child also said she was locked in her room with no access to the bathroom. She told the doctor she \u201chas no bed, no blanket, no pillows and no toys in the room,\u201d according to court documents. <\/p>\n
One of the other children provided similar statements to the doctor. Both older children gave information about the youngest child, which is similar to their experience. <\/p>\n
According to court documents, follow up was done with the children once they were out of the defendants custody. All three \u201cwere thriving\u201d and \u201cgaining an appropriate amount of weight,\u201d documents show. <\/p>\n
The arrest documents also revealed the couple had been under investigation for similar charges in Kentucky. <\/p>\n
Adam and Brittany Spohn\u2019s 20 year sentence will be followed by ten years of probation. <\/p>\n
