Last weekend\u2019s offshore racing season-opener in St. Petersburg, Fla., was not kind to Owen Buis. The 17-year-old throttleman was hoping to make his Super Stock-class debut with driver Cameron Turk debut on his Tampa Bay home-water. He planned to have a strong outing with Louisiana\u2019s Dustin Clouatre in the Mod V ranks. And wanted to cheer his father, Nick, and J.J. Turk Turk\u2014Owen\u2019s dad\u2014to Pro Class 1 success in their XINSURANCE North raceboat.<\/p>\n

But offshore racing often foils the best-laid plans. Buis got a heavy dose of that last weekend in St. Pete.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was not \u00a0a great weekend for us,\u201d he said, then chuckled. \u201cWe had issues with all three boats.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe ended up not starting the Super Stock race thanks to a power-steering problem,\u201d he continued. \u201cThe Mod V boat had unexpected gremlins. We had the start, but broke on the first lap.\u201d<\/p>\n

His favorite Pro Class 1 team didn\u2019t fare much better.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the boat\u2019s batteries died on Saturday when they were running in third place,\u201d Buis explained. \u201cOn Sunday, they barrel-rolled, though everyone was OK.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buis isn\u2019t wasting time with disappointment. On the contrary, he\u2019s pumped for the next event. He\u2019s already deep into prepping for the New Orleans Grand Prix this month.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will have the Super Stock and Mod V boats fixed up and ready to test then race,\u201d he said. \u201cThe Pro Class 1 is at the shop getting repairs done as we speak.<\/p>\n
