TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – More than 1,000 acres of farmland in Madison and Putnam County are now being permanently protected from development.<\/p>\n
Agriculture Commissioner Wilton Simpson made the announcement Thursday and said the protection is through the FDAC\u2019s Rural and Family Lands Protection program. <\/p>\n
\u201cFlorida\u2019s future depends on our ability to protect the land that feeds, fuels, and supports our state, and that starts with keeping working lands in production,\u201d Simpson.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt a time when growth and outside pressures are threatening to reshape Florida, this program ensures our agricultural lands stay in the hands of Florida families, strengthens our domestic food supply, and protects the natural resources that make this state strong and self-reliant.\u201d<\/p>\n

The program allows farmers to continue growing their crops without threats of development.<\/p>\n
\u201cPalustris Partners\u201d and \u201cMas Pines,\u201d both timber operations in Madison County, are being permanently preserved.<\/p>\n
A cattle and timber operation in Putnam County is also being permanently preserved.<\/p>\n
