TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – The Tallahassee Flea Market is set to reopen this weekend in a new location. <\/p>\n
The market shut down last summer<\/a> at its old spot after four decades due to heavy damage from a winter storm.<\/p>\n Organizers say the space at 2801 North Monroe Street will be transformed, with 40 to 45 vendors setting up shop. From food trucks to fresh produce and more, it\u2019s bringing back something that\u2019s been gone for many months.<\/p>\n Eugene Larry, president and organizer of the New Flea Market Exchange and a former vendor, says the loss hit the community hard.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just a horrible, tragic loss, and my heart went out to my community, and I just had to step up,\u201d Larry said. \u201cBut now through that fight we\u2019re finally here, so it\u2019s just excitement and we\u2019re ready to go.\u201d<\/p>\n Larry says community support helped bring the flea market back, but not without challenges.<\/p>\n \u201cWe went and talked to other people on West Tennessee Street, we talked to churches, nobody would respond. It\u2019s just been a very difficult time trying to find the right location,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n That changed when they found a parking lot across from Motel 6 on North Monroe. Larry says the space can hold up to 80 vendors for now, as they continue working with the city to build out a permanent location.<\/p>\n \u201cSo once we found that spot that the city would permit us to do Saturday and Sunday activities, we decided to say, hey, being that this is where the permanent flea market is, let\u2019s utilize this parking lot that again the city has permitted to kind of get everybody back into the spirit,\u201d Larry said.<\/p>\n More Tallahassee news:<\/p>\n Vendor Annette Evans Wilson says she\u2019s looking forward to opening day.<\/p>\n \u201cI want to get out to the most people possible, and the way to do that is to get where the people are, and what better than a flea market,\u201d Wilson said.<\/p>\n Wilson\u2019s nonprofit, YOU, teaches youth life skills to prepare them for adulthood. She\u2019ll be selling items to help fund that work, including canned goods like spaghetti sauce and sweet chili salsa, along with jewelry, gemstones and more.<\/p>\n \u201cThe fact that we have these products that we are selling as fundraisers is important because obviously we need to have an income in order to be able to provide what we have to the public to provide the services, that\u2019s really important,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n Larry says the reopening is especially meaningful not just for the community, but also for vendors who rely on the market for income.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is going to always keep the money within the community so it is imperative as well as important for the community to support these vendors that come out here, and you never know, you may find something at the flea market that you have always been looking for,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n The flea market will be open Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.<\/p>\n To keep up with the latest news as it develops, follow WCTV on Facebook<\/a>, Instagram<\/a>, YouTube<\/a>, Nextdoor<\/a> <\/a>and X<\/a> (Twitter<\/a>).<\/p>\n Have a news tip or see an error?
