Even big-time star power couldn\u2019t save the inaugural Barbie Dream Fest last weekend in Fort Lauderdale.<\/p>\n

Disappointed attendees have taken to social media in the wake of the three-day event, griping that they were sold a bill of goods.<\/p>\n

The superfan experience was touted as an over-the-top, glittery homage to the iconic Mattel doll, but apparently was an epic fail.<\/p>\n

The bright spot? Tennis legend Serena Williams, WNBA baller Angel Reese and deaf Oscar winner Marlee Matlin all showed up on Saturday at the Broward Convention Center. The ladies partook in conversations discussing inclusivity and female power, signed autographs and posed for selfies. So all good there.<\/p>\n

Before the trip, Matlin told the Miami Herald how excited she was to participate.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt feels like one of those events where joy, creativity and purpose all come together in one place, particularly as they pertain to women and girls,\u201d the \u201cChildren of a Lesser God\u201d star wrote via email. \u201cWhen you create spaces where people of all backgrounds can see themselves reflected, that\u2019s powerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

But other aspects of the shindig were apparently sorely lacking. Among the chief complaints was the underwhelming, sparse decor and less than magical attractions.<\/p>\n

On a Subreddit entitled \u201cExpectations vs. Reality,\u201d<\/a> social media users posted snaps of the more problematic areas. For example, the highly promoted lifesize \u201cdream house\u201d was basically a cardboard shanty with \u201ca front yard\u201d made of artificial grass. And an \u201880s-style disco roller rink was a square of concrete blocked off by pink and white traffic cones.<\/p>\n

A guest with the handle @ConsiderationFun7511 shared a few sad pics with the headline, \u201cBarbie Dreamfest\u2026.. more like Barbie Fyre Fest,\u201d referencing 2017\u2019s disastrous music festival in the Bahamas.<\/p>\n

Another patron similarly griped, \u201cWe got Fyre-fested.\u201d<\/p>\n

Other Redditors, especially those who had to travel to South Florida from elsewhere, were upset by how much they had to pay for this less than stellar experience. Prices started at $72 for adults and $33 for kids, shooting up to the $400-plus mark. Those latter VIPs who shelled out three digits reportedly received a \u201cswag bag\u201d with such basics as a plastic hairbrush and hand sanitizer.<\/p>\n

But no worries, at least everyone will see their hard-earned money again; refunds are being issued at point of purchase.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe appreciate the passion and engagement from the Barbie community,\u201d said a statement from the fest\u2019s organizer, Mischief Management. \u201cBringing fans together \u2014alongside Barbie role models, designers, partners, and global icons who embody the true spirit of Barbie \u2014 was at the heart of this event.<\/p>\n
