The Tallahassee Police Department is in mourning after an officer was killed Friday evening in an off-duty boating accident<\/a> on the Wakulla River.<\/p>\n

Michael \u201cCody\u201d Terranova joined the department in 2007 and was remembered by friends and colleagues as “one of a kind.”<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we are mourning the loss of Officer Terranova, a member of our department who meant a great deal to all who knew and served alongside him,\u201d said Chief Lawrence Revell. \u201cThis is a difficult time for our agency, and our focus is on supporting his family, friends, and our personnel as we work through this loss together. We ask our community to keep everyone affected in their thoughts and prayers in the days ahead.\u201d<\/p>\n

A little after midnight, the Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office posted that the Wakulla River Lower Bridge Boat Ramp, located on U.S. Highway 98 (Coastal Highway), was temporarily closed due to an active investigation. The agency did not provide more details, but a spokesperson confirmed that “a single fatality” occurred.<\/p>\n

The ramp has since reopened.<\/p>\n

“The Wakulla County Sheriff\u2019s Office stands with our brothers and sisters at the Tallahassee Police Department during this difficult time,” the agency wrote on Facebook.<\/p>\n

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is investigating the accident. The Democrat has reached out to an FWC spokesperson for information on the accident, who said more information will be forthcoming.<\/p>\n

As news spread of the officer’s death, many took to social media and changed their profile to a TPD badge with a black stripe over it. They offered prayers, condolences and memories of the officer.<\/p>\n

“My heart is absolutely broken over the tragic loss of this officer,” one person wrote on Facebook. “I\u2019m lifting up his wife, family, and loved ones \u2014 there are just no words for this kind of loss. To the Tallahassee Police Department family, please know I am grieving with you and standing beside you.”<\/p>\n

“Prayers going up for the gentleman who just lost his life on the river,” another wrote. “Prayers for strength, comfort and resilience in the days ahead.”<\/p>\n

The Tallahassee Police Department, meanwhile, is making sure the “TPD family” is taken care of as they mourn.<\/p>\n

“Our department is pulling together to support one another, and resources are being made available to every member of our TPD family,” the agency wrote in a post on Facebook. “We ask for your prayers, for the family and everyone that knew him, and extend grace as we all navigate the days ahead.”<\/p>\n
