<\/a>Buddy Dyer, who is also a Democrat, likes little engagement or participation and runs the City of Orlando like he is the only opinion that matters. Eskamani seems to be signaling a new approach for Orlando local government. And the City Council, which has been a rubber stamp for Buddy Dyer, is also being targeted.<\/p>\nAnna Eskamani is encouraging residents to attend City Council meetings (Dyer must hate this), and she wants everyone to find their City Commissioner and call or email them about the issues that are important and to set up a meeting (is everyone at City Hall ok?).<\/p>\n
City Commissioners, who have served as rubber stamps for Mayor Dyer and rarely, if ever, even attempt to stand up to Dyer let alone propose anything different than what he wants. Perhaps if Eskamani is successful in increasing civic participation, Commissioners may feel more empowered to represent the interests of their voters and bring that to City Council. Commissioner Tom Keen is new and Eskamani campaigned with him and supported him in defeating former Republican Commissioner Jim Gray, a strong Dyer ally. That showed she likely intends to be very active in all districts. Commissioner Shan Rose has worked with Dyer, but there have also been rumors coming from City Hall revolving around Dyer putting pressure on Rose, and she campaigned with Eskamani\u2019s campaign during her re-election. So there are potential allies for Eskamani and a new approach on the City Council. She campaigned for the opponent to Commissioner Roger Chapin, a Dyer ally, and Commissioner Patty Sheehan and Eskamani have political history and bad blood. So there is work to be done for Eskamani too, and she is starting early.<\/p>\n
She also informed voters to follow city government more closely, find out about services, learn about upcoming events, tune in to local departments, and stay informed.<\/p>\n
The City of Orlando must be feeling some pressure. But the next election is not until November 2, 2027, so the Dyer administration still has some time left. But that doesn\u2019t mean Anna Eskamani is slowing down from trying to implement a new approach in our local government.<\/p>\n
As she ramps up her campaign and concludes her service as a State Representative, Anna Eskamani provided supporters and voters with some basic information on the local government to encourage more participation \u2013 again, something discouraged by incumbent Mayor Buddy Dyer.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s why we\u2019re kicking off an online educational series to empower you to learn more about City Government, understand how to read a meeting agenda, and find out new ways to get plugged in,\u201d posted candidate Anna Eskamani.<\/p>\n
She is starting by informing voters the Orlando City Council approves local policies and ordinances, sets long-term goals for growth and development, approves the city budget, and decides how public funds are allocated. The candidate noted that City Council also provides direction on issues like land use, housing, public safety, infrastructure and community services. This is why participation and awareness is important at the local level and any attempt to open up the City of Orlando should be welcome by voters.<\/p>\n
