TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – FAMU President Marva Johnson responded to the loss of Coral Springs, Florida, Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen after she was found dead at her home last week.<\/a> <\/p>\n

Police said she was killed in a domestic violence incident with her husband now in custody. According to the Associated Press, her husband, Stephen Bowen, 40, was charged with premeditated murder and tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, per jail records.<\/p>\n

Metayer Bowen was elected to the city commission in 2020. She became the first black and Haitian-American woman to hold a commissioner title in Coral Springs. <\/p>\n

She was also an environmental scientist with degrees from Johns Hopkins and Florida A&M University. <\/p>\n

FAMU President Marva Johnson shared a statement on the FAMU Facebook page. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe Florida A&M University family mourns the devastating loss of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer \u2014 a proud Rattler whose life was a testament to what this institution stands for. She broke barriers as the first Black and Haitian-American woman elected to the Coral Springs City Commission, and she did so with the kind of purpose and servant\u2019s heart that defines the best of FAMU. Her commitment to environmental justice, to her community, and to the people she served reflected the excellence we endeavor to cultivate in every student who walks through our doors.<\/p>\n

Bowen was reelected in 2024 and appointed to serve a second, one-year term as vice mayor in November, per the Associated Press.<\/p>\n

\u201cNancy was not just an alumna. She was a living example of FAMU\u2019s promise in action. Her absence leaves a void that cannot be filled. We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues on the Coral Springs Commission, and all who loved her. The world needed more of Nancy, and we are lesser for her absence,\u201d Johnson said.<\/p>\n

The Coral Springs community, friends and family gathered in front of City Hall Friday to honor and remember her life.<\/a><\/p>\n
