A Florida father received a heart transplant after a staggering seven years \u2014 setting the local record for the longest wait.<\/p>\n

Chevon Byfield, a 39-year-old dad of two, was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 2016 and given just three months to live.<\/p>\n

In between bracing for the inevitable, he and his family sought a second opinion at the Memorial Regional Hospital in Miami, according to a news release<\/a> from the medical center published this week.<\/p>\n

There, he was given life-extending options, including a heart pump known as an LVAD, and placed on the transplant list.<\/p>\n

The average heart transplant patient is typically on the list for a few weeks or months, depending on their condition. Usually, the closer to death someone is, the higher they are on the list. <\/p>\n

But the dad\u2019s height at 6 feet 5 inches, and his blood type, made it more difficult to find a viable heart for him, the hospital said.<\/p>\n

While Byfield\u2019s condition was manageable with the LVAD, the pump only served the purpose of keeping him alive, not improving his condition, doctors said.<\/p>\n

During his seven-year wait, Byfield experienced a buildup of significant antibodies in his bloodstream, which caused multiple infections and repeat hospitalizations. <\/p>\n

Byfield estimated that he likely spent at least three years \u2014 or 1,095 nonconsecutive days \u2014 inside Memorial Regional Hospital receiving treatment for his various conditions sometimes for months at time.<\/p>\n

When he wasn\u2019t laid up in the hospital, whose staff quickly became an extended family, the dad could be found volunteering with EMS teams and teaching them how to treat patients with heart pumps or mentoring others with similarly daunting diagnoses, KSL<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you\u2019ve been in here as long as I have and seen the things I\u2019ve seen, there\u2019s nothing I can do to repay these people. I\u2019m truly happy to help others because that\u2019s the only way I feel I can give back \u2014 and I still feel like it\u2019s not enough,\u201d Byfield told the outlet.<\/p>\n

In 2026, though, his condition worsened. Dr. Jose Garcia, Byfield\u2019s surgeon, told the outlet that \u201che was running out of time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Byfield finally hurdled the seven-year line and was matched for a new heart in February 2026.<\/p>\n

Even after setting a record for the longest wait at any Memorial hospital in the area, Byfield admitted he had mixed feelings about the life-saving gift.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt does dawn on me that for me to continue living, somebody has to die. I want to see my children grow up, but I also know my day of celebration would be a day of mourning for another family,\u201d Byfield said.<\/p>\n

But he wouldn\u2019t dare turn down the ultimate act of charity. The procedure was a success, and he\u2019s in recovery now, the hospital said.<\/p>\n

Byfield hopes his \u201cCinderella story\u201d can help inspire others to be more accountable for their health. <\/p>\n

\u201cDon\u2019t take your health for granted. Get your checkups, go to the doctor. Sometimes we feel like we\u2019re invincible, but we don\u2019t realize how much a little checkup or a doctor\u2019s visit can matter,\u201d Byfield told the outlet.<\/p>\n
