While this writer tried to keep up with the brackets, it was nearly impossible to avoid scheduling conflicts with the incredible variety of events happening across South Florida, including the always-popular Miami-Dade County Fair & Exposition, which just wrapped up another successful season.

The weekend of March 14–15 brought plenty of rain to South Florida, but that did not stop people from celebrating. From JohnMartin’s St. Patrick’s Day Street Festival on Miracle Mile to Calle Ocho in Hialeah, music was playing and crowds were out enjoying the festivities.

Further south, plant lovers gathered for Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden’s premier spring Orchid Festival, which featured more than 150,000 blooming orchids, rare plant vendors, and expert-led workshops. The event also highlighted conservation efforts through Fairchild’s Million Orchid Project, the nation’s largest educational outreach program dedicated to orchid preservation. To date, the program has successfully propagated more than 700,000 native orchids.

Back in Coral Gables, the Coral Gables Woman’s Club held its monthly bingo party on March 10 at Birdie Bistro on the Granada Golf Course, with proceeds benefiting the club’s free children’s dental clinic, which the club owns and operates. This month’s event was jokingly renamed “Gringa Bingo” when Alexandria Guillen stepped in to call the numbers in place of regular volunteer caller “Gringo” Steven Bradley, managing partner of Vivo Sports & Social at Dolphin Mall. Thanks to generous sponsor Lynn & Hal Wanless, Jerome Kavulich and Kim and Tom Davison. This last event made more than $1,000 for the club’s clinic with more funds coming in from a Jazz and Art night at CGWC’s historic clubhouse on March 19.

Next, on March 27, the club hosted another fun night on the Granada Golf Course with Tee Time Under the Stars, from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring glow-in-the-dark golf with lighted holes. The $60 admission included golf, lite bites, and a wine and beer bar. Details can be found in this issue.

Looking ahead, this hardworking group of women is planning its annual Mother’s Day Brunch on May 9, which promises to be an over-the-top affair featuring a carvery station, unlimited mimosas, shopping, silent auction and more. This year’s theme will be tied into the South Florida PBS Titanic Immersive Voyage, with South Florida PBS serving as the event’s major sponsor.

Speaking of the Titanic experience, the GFWC Doral West Dade Club is planning a trip to Boynton Beach to attend a VIP after hours a Titanic Immersive Voyage on April 25. This promises to be a great opportunity to support community projects and have a great time.

Bus with drinks and food will leave International Mall between 3-3:30 p.m. Guests should be prepared for a spectacular experience after which there will be more partying on trip home with a boxed meal and Titanic Trivia competition with prizes. A limited number of tickets are still available at $150 pp. For more info and to reserve a spot. email gloria@cnews.net.

Finally, the Greater Kendall Business Association held a lovely mixer on March 18 going east to South Gables at Beauty & The Butcher off red Road across from old Bakery Center It was a lovely affair with delicious passed hors d’oeuvres enjoyed by a small but impressive group of business owners including the organization’s Past President Carlos Ribero who has a video podcast at Community Newspapers.
