{"id":220478,"date":"2026-04-06T13:12:10","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/220478\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T13:12:10","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T13:12:10","slug":"david-jolly-says-fl-dems-cant-presume-theyve-won-hearts-and-minds-after-recent-wins","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/220478\/","title":{"rendered":"David Jolly says FL Dems can\u2019t presume they\u2019ve won \u2018hearts and minds\u2019 after recent wins"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The two upset legislative victories by Democrats in Hillsborough and Palm Beach counties last week came in part because the candidates received considerable support from independents and Republicans who crossed party lines.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Democratic gubernatorial candidate David Jolly says that\u2019s the only way he can win in November, so he\u2019s actively courting those voters in his bid to become the first Democrat to sit in the Governor\u2019s mansion in Tallahassee in nearly three decades.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLet\u2019s not fool ourselves. As Democrats, we need to lead a coalition strong enough to bring in independents and Republicans in a moment when people are screaming for change and begging for change,\u201d Jolly said in front of several hundred enthusiastic supporters at La Teresita restaurant in West Tampa on Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cLet\u2019s not overthink what\u2019s happening in this moment. We are more enthused than ever to turn out and win elections, but let\u2019s not presume that we have already won hearts and minds. We have won votes. We have to demonstrate we\u2019re worthy of the public trust that is heading our way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0net approval rating <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/54453-donald-trump-net-job-approval-drops-to-record-low-march-27-30-2026-economist-yougov-poll\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/54453-donald-trump-net-job-approval-drops-to-record-low-march-27-30-2026-economist-yougov-poll&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720248000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3aSTrbf3BJdreATeEeFdYK\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">dropping to new lows<\/a>\u00a0this week, Democrats are reaping the benefits of that voter malaise. Brian Nathan\u2019s victory in Senate District 14 and Emily Gregory\u2019s in House District 87 last week now make 30 Republican-held legislative seats around the country that Democrats have flipped since Trump was inaugurated for his second term on Jan. 20, 2025. That\u2019s according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dlcc.org\/news\/press\/politico-democrats-are-trouncing-republicans-in-state-elections-since-trump-took-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.dlcc.org\/news\/press\/politico-democrats-are-trouncing-republicans-in-state-elections-since-trump-took-office\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720249000&amp;usg=AOvVaw1JTlqCcyQK0gLy0SO3uvNx\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allegiant360.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-678805 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Sunburn-Ad-728x90-1-e1718033295481.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, public opinion surveys have consistently shown since the 2024 Presidential Election that Democrats continue to struggle with their own approval rankings. An <a href=\"https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/54474-democrats-are-starting-to-like-congressional-democrats-again\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/yougov.com\/en-us\/articles\/54474-democrats-are-starting-to-like-congressional-democrats-again&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720249000&amp;usg=AOvVaw26sIhdqkhfv3WzLqpSpKOz\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Economist\/YouGov poll<\/a>\u00a0released this week shows that just 34% of Americans view congressional Democrats very or somewhat favorably and 55% view them unfavorably.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Illustrating the fact that Democrats are benefitting from voter anger at Trump, Jolly said he recently spoke with a nearly 90-year-old retired (and unidentified) Republican U.S. Senator who told him that while he could never leave the GOP, he intends to vote for every Democrat on the ballot \u201cunless you give me reason not to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Message to GOP voters: We need you<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The former MSNBC political analyst and GOP U.S. Representative began his nearly 45-minute address by thanking any Republicans or independent voters who were in the building with a succinct message: \u201cWe need you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With a voter-registration deficit of nearly 1.5 million voters, Democrats absolutely do need Republicans to cross over to vote for the opposition party in statewide elections and in a majority of legislative and congressional districts throughout the state. That\u2019s what Nathan and Gregory managed last week.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tgh.org\/?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=bannerad&amp;utm_campaign=flpolitics_728x90\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-590625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/728x90_TGHUSF68.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">A survey of 1,125 likely voters\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/florida-2026-poll-donalds-leads-gop-primary-for-governor-republicans-outpace-democrats-in-florida-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/emersoncollegepolling.com\/florida-2026-poll-donalds-leads-gop-primary-for-governor-republicans-outpace-democrats-in-florida-elections\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720249000&amp;usg=AOvVaw03KfTqndLlEk7Mgy6X9i_-\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">by Emerson College<\/a>\u00a0released this week shows Jolly trailing Republican gubernatorial front-runner Byron Donalds by just 5 points, 44%-39%, with 17% undecided (the poll showed Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, the other major Democrat in the race, trailing Donalds by 9 points, 45%-36%, with 19% undecided).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The survey showed that Jolly and Donalds are essentially tied among Hispanic voters. It\u2019s the closest Jolly has been to Donalds in a presumptive one-on-one race, and he maintains \u2014 as he has since he entered the contest last June \u2014 that \u201cwe can win this race.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Policy proposals<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jolly laid out a series of policy proposals Thursday night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Addressing property taxes, he has pushed for months a plan to create a state catastrophic fund and a state sovereign wealth fund to fully pay for hurricane and wind coverage, removing the private market from those responsibilities. \u201cI know there are some people in the room who are going to say some of what my Republican friends in Tallahassee say \u2014 \u2018That\u2019s socialism!\u201d he said. \u201cI just call it cheaper insurance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Regarding property insurance, he didn\u2019t dismiss the need to provide relief to some homeowners. But he said the state needs to do an \u201cinversion\u201d of the 1992 Save Our Homes constitutional amendment and portability provision by providing targeted homestead exemptions for first-time home buyers, allowing more people, especially younger people, to receive financial relief in purchasing a home.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jolly wants to raise revenue for public education to give public school teachers a 30% raise through the state\u2019s Tourist Development Tax.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode=Display_Statute&amp;URL=0100-0199\/0125\/Sections\/0125.0104.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.leg.state.fl.us\/statutes\/index.cfm?App_mode%3DDisplay_Statute%26URL%3D0100-0199\/0125\/Sections\/0125.0104.html&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720249000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3m1DqqH98JjOCj9QnEEbo4\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">State law<\/a> targets those funds for tourism promotion and related purposes, such as convention centers, beach facilities, museums, sports stadiums and arenas.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jolly says that makes \u201cintuitive sense\u201d but not economic sense, \u201cbecause we don\u2019t have a crisis of convention centers in the state of Florida. We have a crisis in public education.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He said he could save homeowners and renters money by capping profits for the investor-owned utilities in the state to \u201cthe national average.\u201d A report by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/energyandpolicy.org\/utility-profit-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">Energy &amp; Policy Institute<\/a>\u00a0released last month showed that electric utilities around the country kept about 15 cents of every dollar they collected as profit last year. However, Florida Power &amp; Light, which serves around 12 million customers through 6 million accounts, had a profit margin last year of 27.44%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jolly was introduced to the stage by former Hillsborough County Democratic State Attorney Andrew Warren, who remains popular with Hillsborough Democrats \u2014 perhaps even more so since Gov. Ron DeSantis\u00a0removed him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/eog\/news\/press\/2022\/governor-ron-desantis-suspends-state-attorney-andrew-warren-refusing-enforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/www.flgov.com\/eog\/news\/press\/2022\/governor-ron-desantis-suspends-state-attorney-andrew-warren-refusing-enforce&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1775331720249000&amp;usg=AOvVaw3py05E68GMk5F7dJVPhStL\" data-wpel-link=\"external\">from office<\/a>\u00a0in 2022 for alleged neglect of duty and incompetence for pledging not to prosecute abortion-related or gender-affirming care cases (Warren lost his bid for re-election in 2024).<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Warren argued that, \u201cafter nearly a decade of Tallahassee\u2019s dysfunction,\u201d Florida deserves a change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cFor eight years, there has been a cancer in Tallahassee,\u201d he said. \u201cDavid Jolly is the cure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Whether Jolly will get a chance to prove that to the entire state won\u2019t be known until August, when he matches up against Demings in the Democratic gubernatorial Primary. In that Emerson College poll of likely Florida voters, Jolly leads Demings, 21%-10%.
