{"id":220734,"date":"2026-04-06T16:34:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-06T16:34:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/220734\/"},"modified":"2026-04-06T16:34:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-06T16:34:08","slug":"island-firefighters-to-host-sanibel-chili-challenge-sanibel-captiva","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/220734\/","title":{"rendered":"Island firefighters to host Sanibel Chili Challenge &#8211; SANIBEL-CAPTIVA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The community can try out some chili, while supporting island firefighters and their families.<\/p>\n<p>The Sanibel Firefighters Benevolent Fund will present its inaugural Sanibel Chili Challenge 2026 on April 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tahitian Gardens shopping plaza on Sanibel. It will entail a family-friendly chili cook-off featuring local restaurants and firefighters, live entertainment and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are the community, and the community is us,\u201d Sanibel Fire and Rescue District engineer Ed Zarick, who is the district vice president for the agency\u2019s District 17, said. \u201cWe, personally, at the fire district have always enjoy chili cook-offs, and we thought it would be great to have on the island.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the proceeds will support the fund and more.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a fundraiser for the Sanibel Firefighters Benevolent Fund, which is a fund we started last year to assist our Sanibel firefighters and their families,\u201d he said. \u201cWe also use the money to help the Sanibel Island community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Several teams will be taking part in the competition, including a group of island firefighters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have chili tasting from some of the local restaurants on the island,\u201d Sanibel fire engineer-paramedic and event co-coordinator Bryan Clement said. \u201cWe have a total of 10 teams.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The participants will include: A Bit of Bailey\u2019s, American Legion Post 123, Blue Giraffe Island Bar &amp; Grill, MudBugs Cajun Kitchen, Sanibel Deli, The Bel Bagels &amp; Deli, The Great White Grill, The Original Cheeburger Cheeburger and Wickies Lighthouse Restaurant, along with the Sanibel fire team.<\/p>\n<p>Made up of local officials, business owners and residents, a panel of judges will decide on the Chili Grand Champion, based on appearance, aroma, flavor, texture, creativity and overall impression.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, attendees will get to cast their vote for the People\u2019s Choice Champion.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is completely up to the people,\u201d he said. \u201cWhatever they feel is best.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The winning teams will receive a trophy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd, of course, bragging rights,\u201d Clement added.<\/p>\n<p>They will also receive a keepsake plaque.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019ll be trophies that come back every year so we can keep adding to them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Drink tickets will be available from the fund for water and sodas.<\/p>\n<p>Cheeburger Cheeburger will offer up beer for sale.<\/p>\n<p>Music will be provided by headliner Eclectic from noon to 2 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re more classic rock kind of style,\u201d Clement said, adding that the band performs rock hits from the \u201960s and beyond. \u201cThe Seagulls and Feelin\u2019 Lucky will open for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The fund will have its shirts for sale, including introducing a new Fourth of July one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ll also be selling the remaining 2026 calendars that we have,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd there\u2019ll be stickers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Event sponsors include EmOcean Coastal Wear, Legion Post 123 and TOI TOI USA.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe really appreciate their support,\u201d Clement said.<\/p>\n<p>Tasting tickets are a recommended $15 donation and include a free soft drink. Also, when attendees turn in their ticket for their pick for the People\u2019s Choice Champion, they will be entered in a raffle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s going to be a Yeti soft cooler,\u201d he said, adding that it will be filled with fund merchandise like shirts and stickers, along with other miscellaneous items donated by EmOcean Coastal Wear.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets will also be available for purchase for a second raffle.
