According to the Florida Highway Patrol, part of the eastbound lanes of I-4 started to flood around 10 p.m. on Sunday.Then around 1:30 a.m. on Monday, the westbound lanes also started to flood.Road rangers were on scene detouring drivers onto the I-4 exit ramps at World Drive. FDOT tells WESH 2 that their crews pumped floodwater out. Chopper 2 captured crews pumping water off the roadway and placing sandbags in an effort to clear the flooding.One driver, Briana Graham, said she drove through the flooded stretch while traveling from the Tampa area and described dangerous conditions with limited visibility.\u201cWe were all doing about 15 miles per hour \u2026 this was kind of questionable,\u201d Graham said. \u201cYou couldn\u2019t stop, you couldn\u2019t back up \u2026 you were in the middle of I-4 and there are people behind you.\u201dGraham said water rose to nearly half her tire at times, and in some cases appeared even higher on smaller vehicles.\u201cYou could barely see what was happening \u2026 it was basically pitch black,\u201d she said. In a statement, FDOT said:\u201cOvernight rainfall early Monday morning caused localized flooding on I-4 near World Drive. All lanes of I-4 were reopened just after 8 a.m. With more rain expected in the forecast this week, teams have taken additional steps to further prepare, including inspecting and clearing drainage systems, staging pumps, and closely coordinating with FHP. Drivers are encouraged to check Florida 511 for real-time travel conditions, including road closures and detours.\u201dFDOT also noted scheduled overnight closures of the eastbound I-4 off-ramp at Exit 62 to World Drive and State Road 417 northbound from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. through April 17.Drivers are urged to use caution, especially during periods of heavy rain, as conditions can change quickly in construction zones.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n
