ST. PETERSBURG \u2014 Fresh off a historic streak of capacity crowds for \u201cCadillac Crew\u201d and \u201cJulius Caesar,\u201d the Studio@620<\/a> is about to present its most provocative production of the season: a bi-racial reimagining of Tennessee Williams\u2019s Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece, \u201cA Streetcar Named Desire.\u201d The production will run April 16-26 at the Studio@620<\/a>, 620 First Ave. S., St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

This production serves as the cornerstone of the Studio\u2019s Sankofa Series. Derived from the Akan word meaning \u201cto go back and get it,\u201d the Sankofa Series at The Studio@620<\/a> is dedicated to broadening our lens of the American theatrical canon.<\/p>\n

Set in the summer of 1965 during the second wave of feminism, Erica Sutherlin \u2014 the show\u2019s director and artistic executive director at the Studio@620<\/a> \u2014 shifts the play\u2019s traditional lens, bringing the classic text into a more holistic light to reflect the complexities of our shared American experience. By casting Marjorie Joseph (Stella) and Max Carley (Stanley) as a bi-racial couple, Sutherlin shifts the play\u2019s traditional lens, exploring how gender, class, and desire collide in a modern context.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe aren\u2019t just staging a classic; we are illuminating it,\u201d said Sutherlin. \u201cReflecting back America by placing a bi-racial marriage at the center of the Kowalski household, the stakes of the story change. The tension between Blanche\u2019s \u2018Old South\u2019 illusions and Stanley\u2019s raw, modern reality takes on a new, urgent dimension.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sutherlin said that the community proved with Studio@620<\/a>\u2019s recent sold-out runs that they want theater that reflects the complexities of 2026.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis \u2018Streetcar\u2019 is exactly that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cA Streetcar Named Desire\u201d arrives during a landmark year for the Studio@620<\/a>, characterized by “achievement and reinvention.” With attendance reaching 100% capacity for the spring\u2019s previous major runs, the studio has solidified its role as the city\u2019s hub for high-impact, culturally relevant storytelling.<\/p>\n

The cast features a dynamic ensemble of regional talent, including Joseph as Stella Kowalski; Carley as Stanley Kowalski; Debbie Yones as Blanche DuBois; Terrance Jamison as Mitch; Jada Griffin as Eunice; and Mike Fasso as Steve. The supporting ensemble includes Spence Gabriel and Alexa Perez.<\/p>\n

This production is presented with the support of the Foundation for a Healthy St. Petersburg.
