(CBS12) \u2014 Lifeguards in Florida had a busy weekend, rescuing more than 70 people from the ocean. <\/p>\n<p>According to our news partners <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/miami\/video\/dangerous-rip-currents-dozens-rescued-at-south-florida-beaches-this-weekend\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CBS Miami<\/a>, many beachgoers were caught in dangerous rip currents, prompting authorities to issue warnings.<\/p>\n<p>Visitors to Fort Lauderdale Beach felt the impact of these strong currents.<\/p>\n<p>Zilah Rozadi, a beachgoer, described the experience: \u201cIt pushes you toward the middle of the ocean. You start over here and then in 30 seconds you\u2019re on the other side. So it\u2019s kind of dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the weekend, red flags were raised along the beach indicating hazardous conditions. <\/p>\n<p>CBS Miami reported that on Saturday alone, lifeguards reported about 14 rescues. In each situation, swimmers found themselves in risky areas where seaweed on the ocean floor made the water dark and difficult to see.<\/p>\n<p>See also: <a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-news-maine-father-dies-saving-kids-in-juno-beach-rip-current-dangerous-rip-currents-drowning-north-yarmouth-maine-juno-beach-florida-rip-tide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Maine father dies saving kids in Juno Beach rip current; how to stay safe at the beach<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Lifeguards explained that these areas have deep channels that allow water to flow back out to sea, creating powerful currents. <\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, the dangers were underscored by two drownings: a man in his 50s in Pompano Beach and a<a href=\"https:\/\/cbs12.com\/news\/local\/florida-news-maine-father-dies-saving-kids-in-juno-beach-rip-current-dangerous-rip-currents-drowning-north-yarmouth-maine-juno-beach-florida-rip-tide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> father<\/a> who drowned while trying to save his children in Juno Beach.<\/p>\n<p>Carrie Becharas, visiting from Michigan, noticed the yellow flags on lifeguard towers and took the time to speak with lifeguards about safety. \u201cI had a lot of conversations with a lot of lifeguards,\u201d Becharas said. \u201cThey explained where it was safe to go in and where it wasn\u2019t safe.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lieutenant Mitchell Mccready of Fort Lauderdale Ocean Rescue emphasized the importance of safety: \u201cWe can\u2019t stress it enough, don\u2019t swim in an unguarded area. The ocean is not a playground for everybody, especially if you\u2019re not watching currents or if you\u2019re not acclimated to beach life.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
