Burnett initially contacted The Miami Times in 2023 to make various allegations of fund mismanagement, harassment and retaliation against MDEAT, resulting in a months-long investigation into the county organization.

MDEAT was founded following the riots that erupted in 1980 after officers were acquitted in the death of Arthur McDuffie. MDEAT was seen as a solution to socioeconomic disparities within the Black community.

Despite this, Miami remains the least affordable city in the country, according to various reports.
