Some might have begun in a spare room or a garage at home or as a side pursuit after work. But over time, they grew into something more. In fact, well over 90% of businesses in Southwest Florida operate with fewer than 10 employees, making these microenterprises a powerful force in our local economy.

Supporting aspiring business owners’ success requires more than acknowledging their impact. It requires a strategic pathway to success, like the one provided by a partnership between the City of Fort Myers’ Southwest Florida Enterprise Center and Goodwill SWFL’s MicroEnterprise Institute.

The Enterprise Center is a city-operated business hub designed to help early-stage companies develop and grow. A place where residents who are ready to build a business of their own can take the next step, moving from their idea phase or home-based operation into a more structured, supported environment.

Martin Byrd Jr. -COURTESY PHOTO

The Enterprise Center’s collaboration with the Institute provides an entrepreneurial ecosystem that connects broad-based training, mentorship and real-world opportunity. Participants enroll in the Institute with an idea, or maybe a personal passion they want to explore as a viable venture or a desire to take an existing operation to the next level. Through the program, they gain training and access to resources that help them move toward their goals.

During the Institute’s six-week course hosted at the Enterprise Center, participants meet twice a week to learn the fundamentals of starting and running a business. This includes developing a feasibility plan grounded in essentials like cash flow, market research and marketing their product or service. Just as important, they gain exposure to local resources and begin to understand what it truly means to operate a successful business.

But the goal is not simply to launch a business—it’s to help participants understand what it takes to build a sustainable venture. It’s an approach that has delivered results: Since the Institute was established in 2010, some 680 graduates have started businesses, with about 65% still operating today. These outcomes reflect a focus on practical education and starting with a strategically lean operation.

The Enterprise Center provides graduates a way to build on that “keep it lean” strategy. By offering below-market-rate space, business development resources and ongoing mentorship, the facility provides a next step for entrepreneurs ready to grow. It allows city-registered businesses to move beyond home-based ventures and into a professional office space or industrial bay while managing operating costs.

Additionally, these fledgling entrepreneurs build relationships with peers, mentors and partners who can help them navigate growth. Access to financial, legal, marketing and accounting expertise are among the many benefits.

And that’s where the broader impact comes into focus. When individuals gain the tools to create and sustain their operations, they improve economic mobility for themselves and their families, helping to strengthen the fabric of our community and, in many cases, build a valuable asset that can be passed down to the next generation.

We have seen this ripple effect firsthand, from home-based businesses taking their first steps to family-run enterprises growing together using real-world business know-how. By removing barriers—whether it’s a lack of access to capital or foundational business knowledge—our partnership helps ensure that business ownership becomes a welcome path for everyone willing to put in the work. The program continues to evolve with new opportunities like an alumni pitch event where graduates showcase their ventures and compete for funding.

Sandra Plazas. -COURTESY PHOTO

And as our locally owned microenterprises continue to help residents thrive as their businesses underpin our economy, we remain committed to creating opportunity from the ground up.

For information about enrolling in the Institute, participating in the Enterprise Center as a business owner or to learn how you can help support our efforts, please call the Southwest Florida Enterprise Center at (239) 321-7085, or Goodwill SWFL’s MicroEnterprise Institute at (239) 995-2106, ext. 2304.
