{"id":224485,"date":"2026-04-09T06:44:20","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T06:44:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/224485\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T06:44:20","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T06:44:20","slug":"amid-rising-costs-miami-considers-new-financial-assistance-programs-for-seniors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/224485\/","title":{"rendered":"Amid rising costs, Miami considers new financial assistance programs for seniors"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami leaders are considering a plan this week to explore new financial assistance for older residents as housing, insurance and everyday expenses continue to climb.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miami.gov\/My-Government\/City-Officials\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">City Commission<\/a> is set to vote on a <a href=\"https:\/\/miamifl.iqm2.com\/Citizens\/FileOpen.aspx?Type=1&amp;ID=3849&amp;Inline=True\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">resolution<\/a> by Ralph Rosado that would direct City Manager James Reyes to develop one or more financial assistance programs for residents 65 and older while also studying a range of policy options aimed at easing economic strain on seniors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami is among the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miaminewtimes.com\/news\/miami-ranked-among-most-unaffordable-cities-on-earth-for-homebuyers-40522399\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">most expensive cities<\/a> to live in worldwide, according to multiple studies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bankrate.com\/mortgages\/american-dream-of-homeownership-turning-into-luxury\/\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">one released by Bankrate<\/a> in December that found that fewer than 1 in 200 homes on the market are affordable for a typical household.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/profile\/Miami_city,_Florida?g=160XX00US1245000#populations-and-people\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">About 16%<\/a> of Miami\u2019s residents are seniors. Many are on fixed incomes, with a sizable share dependent on Social Security. Close to 1 in 3 (32.7%) live at or below the poverty line, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/data.census.gov\/profile\/Miami_city,_Florida?g=160XX00US1245000#income-and-poverty\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">U.S. Census Bureau data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Rosado\u2019s resolution, which Miami Today first flagged, is up for a vote Thursday. It calls for Reyes to design potential assistance programs, review existing initiatives that help seniors and examine what other forms of aid could be added to the mix.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">That includes evaluating grant programs, city-backed assistance efforts and the feasibility of additional ad valorem tax exemptions through constitutional amendments that could reduce property tax burdens for qualifying homeowners.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The measure also directs the administration to examine how current city programs \u2014 such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miami.gov\/My-Government\/Departments\/Grants-Department\/Anti-Poverty-Initiative\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Anti-Poverty Initiative<\/a>, Miami for Everyone program, community development block grants and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miami.gov\/My-Government\/Departments\/Office-of-Capital-Improvements\/Miami-Forever-Bond\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Miami Forever Bond<\/a> \u2014 could be expanded or leveraged to better support seniors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">City staff would be required to return to the Commission within 30 days with a report outlining program models, policy recommendations and potential pathways for implementation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Miami\u2019s latest effort to help its senior population follows similar moves in the nearby cities of Hialeah and Miami Lakes, whose City Councils <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/783681-hialeah-becomes-first-florida-city-to-refund-property-taxes-for-qualifying-seniors\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">recently approved measures<\/a> to provide property tax refunds to qualifying seniors.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">At the state level, Miami Republican Rep.
