Expedition Odyssey<\/a>, the flying theater ride that debuted at SeaWorld Orlando<\/a> last year, is getting a fiery update this year.<\/p>\n

The attraction will be rebranded as Expedition Odyssey Fire & Ice. Its new film still will include animals and scenery but lean into storytelling and narration, park officials confirmed Thursday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are telling a whole new immersive adventure from beginning to end,\u201d said Kevin Boutte, vice president of attraction design.<\/p>\n

In the storyline of the attraction, visitors take on the roles of Arctic researchers on observation missions. The journey showcases the contrast between geothermal fire and ice, Boutte said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGuests will see new environments that they\u2019ve never seen before, new animals that weren\u2019t in the previous experience, such as sperm whales,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd then new environments, like volcanoes. \u2026 I won\u2019t give too much away, but really unique environments that only exist because these forces that are at play. People will be amazed that the world has these types of places,\u201d Boutte said.<\/p>\n

The ride system, designed by German company Mack Rides<\/a>, remains in place. Passengers sit side-by-side in long rows, legs dangling, facing a large domed screen. The visuals are augmented by movement of the seating as well as special effects with mist and smells.\u00a0 The attraction debuted last May in the building that previously housed the Wild Arctic simulator attraction.<\/p>\n

The original version of Expedition Odyssey<\/a>, featuring polar bears and orcas, will remain available to park visitors for a couple of weeks. The attraction will be out of commission for about 40 days for the transition to Fire & Ice.<\/p>\n

The new iteration aims to take more advantage of the ride system.<\/p>\n

\u201cI thought we made a really, really good film about animals and, especially that orca part, is just emotionally stirring,\u201d said Justin Newton, senior vice president of project development.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I also felt like we bought a Ferrari to drive the kids to school. And it was time to get that Ferrari on the Autobahn, which is what we\u2019re trying to do here, to really take advantage of the cool dynamic range of that vehicle, to take advantage of the dynamic range of the projections,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s rare for a theme park to reboot a new attraction a year into its operation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can make something better, and you can get a better touch to the public, why wouldn\u2019t you?\u201d Park President Jon Peterson said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re about inspiration, we\u2019re about education, we\u2019re about entertainment. Tying that together with a ride is a really unique way of doing it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The attraction will continue to have real arctic animals such as walruses and beluga whales on exhibit as part of its exit. That area had been refurbished leading up to the debut of Expedition Odyssey.<\/p>\n

\u201cEven if you don\u2019t want to be Arctic researcher, the hope is you just walk away feeling inspired to preserve and conserve many of the natural worlds and biomes and ecosystems that exist today,\u201d Boutte said.<\/p>\n
