{"id":225228,"date":"2026-04-09T19:18:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:18:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/225228\/"},"modified":"2026-04-09T19:18:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-09T19:18:09","slug":"navy-vets-jimmy-peluso-matt-mccullough-pace-field-in-jax-city-council-fundraising","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/225228\/","title":{"rendered":"Navy vets Jimmy Peluso, Matt McCullough pace field in Jax City Council fundraising"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The race to succeed term-limited moderate Republican\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/482996-matt-carlucci-clears-field-for-jacksonville-city-council-re-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">Matt Carlucci<\/a> on the Jacksonville City Council is beginning to take shape.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">An incumbent Democrat and a political newcomer are running neck-and-neck in the fundraising race in at-large Group 4.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/784363-jimmy-peluso-launches-run-for-jacksonville-city-council-at-large-seat\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Jimmy Peluso<\/a>, who currently represents District 7 in Jacksonville\u2019s Urban Core and some Westside neighborhoods, raised more than $87,000 in his first fundraising report of the 2027 cycle.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cIn just three short weeks, we\u2019ve reached out to stakeholders and leaders across our community, and their choice is clear: they\u2019re ready for strong, effective leadership that delivers results for Jacksonville. The incredible early support we\u2019ve received is a powerful testament to that momentum. And we\u2019re just getting started,\u201d said the Navy veteran and lobbyist for the VyStar Credit Union.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Tampa Bay Rays owner <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draysbay.com\/rays\/86636\/patrick-zalupski-issues-statement-to-his-shareholders-on-purchase-of-tampa-bay-rays\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Patrick Zalupski,<\/a>\u00a0the Sleiman Group, lawyer Wayne Hogan, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/dos.elections.myflorida.com\/committees\/ComDetail.asp?account=73881\" data-wpel-link=\"external\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"external noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Friends of Carlos Guillermo Smith<\/a> political committee were among the 135 donors this cycle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucf.edu\/lp\/floridas-technological-university\/?utm_source=florida_politics&amp;utm_medium=display&amp;utm_campaign=tallahassee_2026&amp;utm_content=brand\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener external noreferrer nofollow\" data-wpel-link=\"external\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-783689 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-fl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/UCF-Brand-728x90-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"728\" height=\"90\"\/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Close behind with $86,000 raised is <a href=\"https:\/\/floridapolitics.com\/archives\/775009-matt-mccullough-joins-race-to-replace-matt-carlucci-on-jacksonville-city-council\/\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Matt McCullough<\/a>, a former Navy pilot who flew during the global war on terror in Operations Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom and Active Endeavor. McCullough has received two Air Medals, Navy Commendation Medals, a Meritorious Service Medal, and recognition as both Combat Aircrew of the Year and Pilot of the Year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Among his donors: a political committee associated with Rep.\u00a0Dean Black; current Councilmen\u00a0Joe Carlucci, Matt Carlucci and Terrance Freeman; a political committee associated with Councilman Rory Diamond; former Rep. Jay Fant; and former City Councilmen Greg Anderson and Bill Gulliford.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Peluso is the only Democrat in the field, suggesting he should have few issues emerging from next March\u2019s First Election. That contest will see the top two finishers emerge in the General Election in May unless someone gets more than half the vote.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Two other Republicans are in the race.
